Thank you all for your many considered responses. So much good info for me to think on. I recently disposed of some spare rifles I no longer used or enjoyed, a 300 Win Mag M70 and a Vanguard 30-06, in favor of this wonderful old well worn Herter U9 .270 Win I found. It has a 24" barrel. It came with a less than effective 3-9x 40 so I swapped that out in favor of a new Nikon 2-7x33 with dpx. The diff is amazing. Yesterday I was at Pueblo West Sportsman's club range and after some zeroing at 25 and 100y I shot a 5 shot group with Win 130gr PowerMax that could be covered by a half dollar. Moving thence to the 200 then the 300y range I did some more clicking and after a few shots at 300 I made a dead center bullseye. Given the fact that wife and I drew buck muley tags in u68 I feel more than ready for more high country hunting. My lung meds give me the shakes so I typically dont shoot that well even off the bench, but yesterday was stellar. Now I want to get some Hornady Superformance 130sst to compare to the PowerMax. And some HSM 130btsp if they ever get caught up on orders and start selling it again. And also try some good 150gr ammo. Or maybe find me a local to reload my many many .270 cases as I no longer reload( was bored with it after 40 yrs). The next project is to swap out wifes Sav 110 30-06 in favor of same in .270 as she has been complaining about recoil after12 yrs of hunting with her 06 with 150gr and 165gr. Her stock is custom LOP so I'll just buy a 110 .270 and swap the iron into her stock then sell the 06 iron. May 22 is antelope draws so maybe I'll draw a good lope tag and have a .270 kind of yr. Good luck on all your shooting and hunting.
