270Win

My choice of scope for the 270 would be a Leupy Vari X III 4.5 x 14 x 40 with an AO. Wonderful scope.

I have tried a good many calibers and finally settled in with the 270 caliber. About 85 % of my hunting for the last 39 years has been with a 270 and I have had a number of them. I hunt mostly in SC and TN with white tailed deer being my largest quarry. The most accurate round I have shot was 35 grains of 3031 powder pushing a 85 gr. speer boat tail bullet out of a 6 mm rifle. I never felt adequately gunned with the 243 or 6 mm rifles for white tailed deer even though I used 105 gr Speer bullets in them. Many people love them though. The 270 would do everything the 06 would do with less powder and noticeably less recoil. However if I lived out west I would seriously consider the 7mm or 300 WM. Wonderful thing abiout this country ....... the right to choose and use the one we want ....... or at least that has been the case.

i use a swarovski 4-16x50 TDS4 on my custom sako 75 .....270

im using a lot of 110gr v max for shooting hinds and calfs they dont half explode .

it has to be the best cal for sika sized deer

All I know is I shot a coyote in the hip and it literally destryed the entire hip area with no exit? personally I like the v- max for th efact that it is a high fragmentation bullet. Thats been my experience.

Does anyone use Win760 powder in their 270 hand loads? I started out with it and Hdy 130gr SPs and eventually developed a decent load that shoots between cloverleaves and 1.5 MOA 4 shot groups. The load is 52.0gr W760, GM210 OAL 3.280. The equipment is a Leopold 3-9 X 40 on a Browning BAR 22" barrel.

But with that mix I only get velocities up to about 2780fps, more powder and the groups become inconsistent and pressure builds.

H4350 has not solved the velocity problem and not increased accuracy. I developed a 130gr TSX load of 54.0gr 4350, and that yields about 2860fps. Seating the bullets .010 deeper and its 2930fps but excessive pressure signs are happening; flattened primers and headstamp of ejector pin. One Winchester case even ruptured and it had only been reloaded a few times!

(I'll add that the 110gr Sierra Pro Hunters hold consistent sub MOA with the W760 - 56.7gr, going out at about 3200fps.)

For these lead free TSX hunting bullets (soon trying 130gr GMX) I would like to boost the velocity another 100 - 200 fps without the excessive pressure.

Any suggestions based on your experiences?

I have not tried anything slower but I have some RL22, IMR4831, (and H1000 which I guess is too slow).

Thanks in advance, guys.

H4831sc is an excellent powder for 270. It has produced excellent results with many bullets in 270 for me and is my favorite powder for the 270. I have found IMR 4350 to be good as well. Although I haven't tried Win 760 for tghe 270 I am currently working with it for loads for a 22-250 AI and a 260. A friend of mine has used it in 22-250 and 220 Swift for many years and aftrer trying many powders he now uses nothing but Win760. Because of his experience I am working towards a load for the 2 mentioned calibers. He said that in addition to being the best powder he has used it is also a cooler burning powder and should increase barrel life.

Thank you all for your many considered responses. So much good info for me to think on. I recently disposed of some spare rifles I no longer used or enjoyed, a 300 Win Mag M70 and a Vanguard 30-06, in favor of this wonderful old well worn Herter U9 .270 Win I found. It has a 24" barrel. It came with a less than effective 3-9x 40 so I swapped that out in favor of a new Nikon 2-7x33 with dpx. The diff is amazing. Yesterday I was at Pueblo West Sportsman's club range and after some zeroing at 25 and 100y I shot a 5 shot group with Win 130gr PowerMax that could be covered by a half dollar. Moving thence to the 200 then the 300y range I did some more clicking and after a few shots at 300 I made a dead center bullseye. Given the fact that wife and I drew buck muley tags in u68 I feel more than ready for more high country hunting. My lung meds give me the shakes so I typically dont shoot that well even off the bench, but yesterday was stellar.

Now I want to get some Hornady Superformance 130sst to compare to the PowerMax. And some HSM 130btsp if they ever get caught up on orders and start selling it again. And also try some good 150gr ammo. Or maybe find me a local to reload my many many .270 cases as I no longer reload( was bored with it after 40 yrs).

The next project is to swap out wifes Sav 110 30-06 in favor of same in .270 as she has been complaining about recoil after12 yrs of hunting with her 06 with 150gr and 165gr. Her stock is custom LOP so I'll just buy a 110 .270 and swap the iron into her stock then sell the 06 iron.

May 22 is antelope draws so maybe I'll draw a good lope tag and have a .270 kind of yr.

Good luck on all your shooting and hunting.

Silvertip- That is a nice looking rifle, and a very good 5 shot group if its 200 yrds, even decent if at 100 considering it is factory loaded ammo. You got lucky that your rifle likes that ammo if you don't reload your own! I don't get that on my 270 from factory rounds, but do with my handloads which of course is a lot of work. Looks like you are ready to go hunting!

I'm taking my 270 out this week on a pig hunt. Will post some pics if I get one.

The Nikon BDC system has worked well for me.

I use those same targets because holes are easy to see and you get 5 targets on 1 piece of paper.

That target is 100y. Good luck on the pig hunt. I often use those targets working from the big center to the smallest in the corners. Shoot small miss small. Now to get the wife on board with a .270. Good luck on your pig hunt.
