I have a Remington 700 action that was on a 25.06. What I am wondering what other calibers I can use this action for ?

any long action (or even short action) round. any of the 06 family including the 270. if you have a smith that can open up the bolt face, then you can use any of the 284 family as well as non-belted mags. no short mags, no 223 size/family. you could make it a 243/260/308 family stuff but that is more short action, you wouldn't need a long action, but you COULD use it for that.

Little work and the magnums will work also.

Why would you need to open the 25-06 boltface for the 284 cartridge?

I was kind of wondering about the .284 size mentioned also cause on my Savage Striker pistol I can swap barrels from a 22-250 to .284 Win without changing my bolt head . Or from .243 , .260 ,7-08 ,308 ,.270 or 30-06 to .284 with just a head space gauge and some tools !

yep, that was pretty comprehensive. on the 284. I was thinking they were different, but didn't look. maybe its that the brass gets bigger after the face...

Brewer, the 284Win is .473" at the case head but it wears a rebated rim and the rear of the case body is .500".

    Gunpoor,

Ah, yes. I finally looked at a picture with the measurements. that is it. I don't meant to hijack this thread but why did they do that or why don't they always do that? (whoever 'they' is) making the case body larger than the rim?

I suppose they wanted to get the larger case capacity while keeping the standard bolt face. The 50 Beowulf is another cartridge that uses a smaller rim (.445") and larger body diameter (.535") and I don't know where they came up with the rim diameter, .005" smaller than 357Mag. There isn't anything special about this rebated rim as they load like any other non-rebated rim cartridge.

I also have a 25/06Rem that I have thought about having rebarreled, a Ruger tang safety M77. It was my late father's deer rifle and the bore is dark and doesn't shoot very well. I have had a couple of 30/06s and several 270Win and don't need a 35Whelen although I think that is a cool cartridge. I have a little model 600 Remingtion in 6mmRem w/18" barrel, and have thought about doing a 6mmRem long range semi-heavy varminter. I may do nothing with it and let one of my kids do something with it as I am getting no younger and my firearm needs are dwindling with age.
