convince me that a 22.250 in 1+14 twist would be better than my 223 in 1-12 twist for coyotes. i can shoot out to 400 yds now so would a 22.250 increase my range that much more or just burn more powder.
With a 14 twist 22-250, you will be limited to shooting light bullets ~40-45 grains (read low BC). They'll be screaming fast, but won't be very stable when shooting long range.
I have a 12 twist 223. It will shoot 55-60 grain bullets (read: better BC). While not as fast as a 22-250, it will be more stable and potentially more accurate at longer range. My 12 twist 223 will shoot 600 yards, but not quite 'yote accurate at that range.
If I were to build a long range 22, I'd want a 7 or 8 twist so I could shoot 90+ grain bullets. Then you have a 1k rifle with either the 223 or 22-250.
With a 1:14 22-250 you are not limited to 40-45 gr bullets. Most factory 22-250's come in a 1:14 and will stabilize at least the 55 gr. pills and in many cases the 60 gr. pills, alothough that is usually the upper end for bullet weight for a 1:14. Unless you're looking for an excuse to buy another rifle (nothing wrong with that) the 223 won't perform a whole bunch different than the 22-250 at 300-400 yards....especially with the 1:12 twist, i'd be shooting the 60 gr. Vmax's. The 22-250 would just hit them a little harder....but dead is dead.
I use them both at the p-dog town. The 250 does kill em deader and quicker! The 223 vmax'x makes a pretty good mess but the 250 moves them piece by piece to the next hole. I use 40gr vmax in the 223 and Nosler comp 52gr BTHP in the 250. Pretty good setup.
