I'm thinking about a 223 AI. How much does it shorten barrel life ?
I wouldn't expect it to dramatically shorten barrel life. Keep in mind the 22-250 is generally shooting similar weight pills at much higher velocities/charge weights, and typically they have fairly good barrel life (not 223, mind you, but are not considered barrel burners).
I have a slightly different version than the Ackley. Mine is a 35 degree, instead of 40 degree, that an old BR friend came up with back in the 70's. I have been shooting it with 50Gr. bullets at 3550 fps. I have at least 3000 rounds through this barrel, since 1994, and it still shoots great. I think the biggest gain is case life.
