Is any one shooting 175 SMK out of a 1-12 twist? I have factory 700 VS That shoots the 168'S good but was thinking about doing some 1000yd shooting. How fast do I need to shoot them and whats a good load to start with.

We are shooting the 208 Amax out of a 1-12 twist with great results.

what caliber are you shooting the 208 out of, mine like's the 175's better than the 168's and the 178 a-maxs even better, also what speed are you getting with the208's, I am shooting the 178's at 2740 and they shoot great.

I've used 175gr Mk's in a 1-12 twist before... they seem to shoot just fine from a longer barrel rifle {.308 Win}.. say 26" plus. I shoot a 27.5" inch in 1-11 right now using the 175gr Mk's they work great. For shorter barrel rifles, I like the 1-10 twist in fact I like the 1-10 twist Polygonal'..., from Pac Nor.
The load that works best for me is in .308 Win; 175gr. Mk, Federal 210M primer, Lapua brass, {43.5grs} RL-15'..., vel's 2650 fps with very low SD's.

The 208s are comming out of a 26in 308WIN. Shooting RL-17 we are getting 2600-2675. The load that we are using is giving us 2630fps.

    jeffro,
Thanks for the sitrep on your load... I've got about 5 pounds of RL-17 which I was saving for heavy bullets in my 6XC; looks like I may give it a run with a few 208gr'ers in my .308 Win.

The ballistic numbers will really shock you. Quite impresive out of the 308WIN.

thanks for the info I am going to get some 208s and try them if I can get 2650 and accurate that would be a hammer on deer out there a long ways, I shot one with the 178 at 550 yards not a long ways but man it blew through it like no-body's business and left a huge exit the 208 would do just the same at like 700 yards.

I wont to thank you guys for all the information. I just shot some 208'S with Varget an this is what I got. 46.5gr 2508fps, 47gr 2572fps with a small mark on the case, 47.5 gave me 2606fps with a slightly sticky bolt. I don't have any RL 17 but I would like to try it now I will see if it will shoot groups then I will have me a long range target load.

There is info out there using Varget. I think its a better powder than R-17 for 168s, but others have not got as high of velocity as you can get with R-17 with the 208s.
