That sounds awful to shoot. I like the horsepower though with a copper. Talk about a lightning bolt.

I don't know though….Been listening to all these new aged hunting podcasts and they pretty much say you should only use Berger bullets and 6.5s….

Meanwhile I make things like these .375s with 235 TSXs shooting at 2975 fps. .308 Win next door for reference.

I have a 338 RUM 26" shooting 235HH bullet north of 3200 fps and it is very manageable to shoot with a coulee brake. Pleasant enough to shoot 3/8" group at 100 yards. The rifle is a custom from the Smith that shoots the 338/378!

I feel terrible....after reading this Old dusty thread I find out the 338 Edge was born in the Late 90's . Cant believe I lost out on all the years of shooting one !

I picked up the new 300 ultra and thought I was Hot stuff ! Lol
I have held and watched a few 338-378 get fired but never owned one .
I'm super happy with the 338 Rum and the 338 Edge for all my short to Long range hunting !!
Its been nothing short of Amazing for me so far !

Dave introduced me to the JP Enterprise Beenie Coulee in 2012 and installed it on my .270 AI. They are very good MBs.

I am going to switch to the 225SH as I should have them today or tomorrow in the mail, the possibility of velocity north of 3300 and " maybe " very close to 3400 is real. The 235HH at 3200 is a hammer on plates, one load with RL19 is 3175 average and RL22 is almost 100 fps faster! The rumor is we may see a 220-225 HHT and I will try that from Hammer. They are very easy in load development to shoot into small groups, with speed!
The 338/378 and the 338 RUM are very close to each other but the Weatherby has the edge.

I love my 340Wby and use it for most all my elk and Alaska hunting. Had my Rem 700 in 300Wby rebarreled and bedded by Guy Malmborg of Salt Lake City, as he was referred to me by Ackley in his late years. I shot a 5pt bull in early 2000's in Meeker with the 338/378 behind the shoulder and it didn't react at all. Knowing I hit him good, I watched him as he walked 30 yards and collapsed. Whether 340 or 338/378, from 100 to 400 yards I've always gotten complete penetration with Nosler Partitions. Although the 340Wby has slightly less velocity, it is a couple pounds lighter than my buddy's 338/378 thus much more comfortable to carry.

Down here in the Deep South, my son loves the 338 Fed for whitetails, hogs and other critters. I've tailored a load for his Kimber 84M and just can't believe what a fine rifle that is for being excessively light - near 6lbs with scope.

338 is definitely an excellent game getter, always leaving a good blood trail!

I have a 338am and a 338edge on the way. Here's what I'm getting out of the edge if I use a 300gr otm. I've always been a 338 dude from the very get-go. With my very first magnum in a 338WM when I was 19 shooting the 160gr x bullet at 3400 fps nothing got away lol.

I loved my 340 wby, got it in my early 20's.Basically shot a herd of elk with it and bear, deer,moose.I shot the barnes in it some early, would shoot thru a 12'' pine, found when trying for a big whitey in timber.Shot mainly partitions 225.Sot out into the 800 yard range with it.Scopes where not where they are today, it wore 3x15x50.My sons now.Then I went to 338NM,had the 6-20 mark 4 on that starting, but also not liking it for close quarters, brushy areas I had to get threw on way up to ridge tops.It got a 3-24x52 March,last 14 years. Elk are first on my list just like how the 338's perform on them.I remember when I was real young running into these 2 cowboys way up on mountain.Me asking about the elk they shot ,as they put it 1/2 mile.I noticed they both had Weatherbys in their scabbards and I asked about caliber,340wby.That when I first new I wanted one, those where the good ole days

Love my 340 Wby! I've never felt like I needed more gun for anything, 225 TTSX at 2,975. That said, I've got a 33XC running 260 HH's at 3200. A very mild load and shoots fantastic! I had a couple 338/378's and both were awesome and quite accurate, just never shot any critters with them since they were a bit on the heavy side.

I have 4 of them in different calibers from .240 to .378. When I was younger, I've hunted all over the western states with the .378 and taken many elk, bear and deer and even sheep. I got a lot of weird looks from fellow hunters, lol.
There is nothing like seeing you animal getting slammed to the ground like Thor's hammer smashed it.
Now I prefer the .340 WBY for elk and the 30:06' for everything else. I load nothing but Barnes bullets at max velocities, but tuned down to best accuracy. The .240 gets 80 gr TTSX, the '06 gets the 168 gr TTSX, the .340 gets 225 gr TTSX, and the .378 gets 270 gr TSX.
