Anyone Notice any thing strange when shooting in cross wind.

Years ago I did alot of bench rest shooting and learned a valuable lesson at one shoot. Being a relative newcomer to the sport my guns were only ever sighted in. Meaning I had mo idea about setting my zero's on my scope. Well at one 2 day shoot we had a strong wind from the right it lasted for about 2 rounds of shooting. All of a sudden during the gathering of the targets and changing our rifles for the next class the wind changed. Now that doesn;t sound bad but it came from the left twice as hard as it had been from the right. Alot of the shooters had their zeros set but even they had trouble with this. What we discovered that day was that a wind from the right will cause a bullet to rise. A hurricane force wind from the eft will drop bullets as much as 5 inches at 200 yards. Has anyone else ever noticed this and would it be opposite with opposite hand twist in rifling.

Hello,

The term for this is aerodynamic jump.

Edited to add...
Great article on this from ballistic genius Gus Ruiz and James Boatwright.

Is there a way of figuring this jump out depending on wind speed and bullet velocity. As I noticed that my 22-250 did not seem to be as effected as my 308Win. Just guessing here but the velocities were likely close to 900fps difference.

Yep, the affect will vary with rifle twist. They are opposite for left and right twist barrels. Most US made barrels all have the same twist so it's not that big of a deal once you understand the problem.

I believe most of the more modern ballistic calculators take this into consideration.

Now you guys have done it got e looking for a hand held ballistic computer. Another thread mentioned the Kestrel5700. If a guy gets one of these should he go with the Elite or theSportsman there appears to be about a 100 dollar difference. Is the Elite worth it or not neither one is outrageous for price.

That's ok, I'm getting a new tablet this week and one of it's jobs will be as a BC so I'm fixing to start a thread on "Best Ballistic App for Android Devices".

I had looked on line at ballist calculators but I do not have a cell phone to carry with me. Beside the Kestrel Elite has a ton of features including wind meter all in one device. It was also the only place I found any thing mentioned about aerodynamic jump calculations.

I have kestrel sportsman, it can be updated to the elite. The only difference is the elite can have 16 different ballistic profiles and contains Litz's library of bc in it, otherwise they do the same thing. The sportsman can have 3 ballistic profiles

It's likely that no further discussion is required, in which case we recommend starting a new thread. If however you feel your response is required you can still do so.
