Ruger M77 Tang safety. Uncanny accuracy

My new daughter-in-law wanted to try deer hunting, so I bought her an older Ruger in 6mm Rem. at a gun show. The first 5 shot group I fired at 100 Yds went into a 1/2" hole. My daughter-in law had never fired a centerfire rifle, so I had her try a group over the bench. She only got a 3/4"...

    Model 700 Mountain Rifle problem

I used the barrel bedding technique I found in, "Sporting Rifles, A designer's Notebook,' to cure my lightweight 30-06 of this same problem. This technique allows varying the barrel dampening pressure at will until the "sweet spot" is located. RF

    making a stock

I have making rifle and shotgun stocks for about 50 years; 90 % were from wood blanks. I now use only blanks that have been "normalizing" in my atmosphere-controlled room for 30 years (after the kiln treatment). I try to do best-quality work, 95% with hand tools. It takes me about 40 hours to...

    25-06 for hogs

The 25-06 certainly works for me and my hunting companion on hogs. We use the 110 Gr Accubond for most shooting, but for the longer ranges and/or larger hogs (300+ lbs) we use the Remington 115 Gr Ckor-lok ultra-bond. It also works perfectly on mule deer. RF

    1rst Hog hunt, please help

Just returned from Texas, helping a rancher to rid hogs from the immediate area. We have found that any bonded core from the 25-06 through the 375x74R works perfectly for shoulder or head shots. Heck, the ranch manager uses a 22 LR semi-auto, claiming that, "any hog with 16 LR bullets in him...

    looking for a new gun.

Browning rifles work just fine. It's a matter of personal taste and your pocket book when it comes to buying a rifle. All of the name brand rifles work well. Pick one that you feel will serve you the best over a long period of time. One thing to consider is the resale value of lesser known...

    120 Grain .257 Speer

I use it in 25-05 to kill deer and antelope. Works perfectly for this so far. RF

    Why not Weatherby

My 300 Weatherby, straight from the factory box, put the first three shots into a 1 1/2 group at 300 yards, using 190 grain Hornadys. It kills elk too. RF

    LRH Specialty Handguns

I found an excellent book describing the development of high speed revolver cartridges, such as the 22-32 Magnum. The development stages for both the cartridge and two different revolvers are fully explained, with drawings. It's called, "Sporting Firearms, A designer's Notebook,' available...

    Twist rate

A 1:8 should work. You can calculate the exact twist rate by using formulas from various sources. The best source I have found is from the book, "Sporting Firearms, A Designers Notebook" obtainable from Amazon.com It has a companion CD with several programs, one of which has the most popular...

    looking for a new gun.

The short mags are a fad that appears to be fading. The cartridge and components costs for the standard calibers cost less. The short-fat cartridges do work through shorter magazines, but loose some inherent capabilities due to their bullets being deeply seated in the case. [This is fully...

    looking for a new gun.

Id pick the 280 Rem. It does the same thing as the 7mm REM Mag on bears and large deer, but with less ruckus on the shooter's shoulder. Another option is to get a 7mm Mag and handload. You would instantly have a 7x57, 7mm-08, 280 Rem, and the 7mm Mag in one rifle. I should mention that I...
