    Any rifle you buy in that price range will be good, with very few exceptions. Have your buddy do some research and see what feels and shoots the best, for him. When you ask these types of questions, your head will be spinning from the plethora of answers.

    Did you go back with the dog and find that deer? Shot placement, bullet integrity is irrelevant at this point. You owe it to that deer to give 100% effort in finding it. This is a part of hunting. Whether you want to or not.

    Why not a faster twist in the 270 Winchester

    I built a 270wsm, PacNor barrel, with a longer throat and 1:8 twist to accommodate the Matrix 165 and Berger 170's.     Thats what I did. 1:8 twist, and had the barrel opened up to shoot the 165 gr. Matrix. Supremely accurate.

    Must use 30 cal for moose

    My father in law took a moose up in Alaska with a Savage 300 lever gun. 80 yards bang flop. 150 gr Cor-lokt. Don't think you need the latest and greatest, so any of those 30 cal. rifles you own will do. Unless you're looking at taking one past 1000 yrds.
