When you say "Modern", do you mean Marlin or Ruger Level loads?
Varget is usable with both of those levels. It to, is a very versatile powder. I'm able to use it from 223 to 45-70. May not be the best be for all loads but it works and I have that, and not 4198.
There is a cool factor with the 7x57. With hand loads you can substantially increase the velocity at a later time over the book numbers. Those numbers are held low for old military surplus rifles that are 100 years old.
