300 blackout is too weak for deer (graphic)

Grew up not wasting anything, .22 was considered the best. Dang game wardens ruined that! The brains are great & necks make excellent barbacoa or osso buco. I’ve used that bullet, not as hot, on a doe facing me about 90 yards. Don't like those shots but went ahead and went low. Her nose was on...

    2023 Doves

It ‘‘twas a great day! Old GEHA Mauser did the job, not as soft as others, but Mauser were never meant to be.

Hog bait that squirrels (and deer, doves, etc.) don't like

Lazy way. Throw out a bunch of corn & cover with an old piece of plywood. Hogs are the only creature that’ll move it.

Load data for Speer 140 gr Gold Dot

Great bullet for 6.5x55 +P (running hot). Stays together and penetrates amazing. Good bonded bullet.

Blood trailing lights - do they really work?

A good white flashlight or lantern are great, used both. The latern with the new style mantles work great. I also carry some hydrogen peroxide in a spray bottle, misting the trail helps me find those minuscule drops.

    22 LR hollow point suggestions

Years ago was looking for a deep penetrating 22lr for head shootin hogs. The Federal ??? with a truncated point, weight was about 37 or 38 grains, had the deepest. Beaned (no offense) serveral hogs, furtherst was about 80 yards. Scared him up close and yelled obscenity's at him as he ran. Must...

Talk to me about 8mm cartridges and bullets

I have a CZ with the double trigger in 8x57 and love it! Use either Barnes 180 or Hornady 170 sst, pushed with a fair douse of CFE 223. Very accurate, but not the ultra long range rifle.

    Blast from the past II

Gotta love South Texas! Got my first deer outside of Hebronville in’75, a spike with a borrowed 03 Springfidle 30-06. Never been so excited AND had meat during poor boy college times!

Your favorite Quarter Bore and why

I’ve got two 25 ack improved and a 257weatherby. I’ll pick the AI’s anytime. Ones on a Mexican Mauser with 23” barrel & the other is a Ruger #1 with 26” barrel. They think they are are 25/06’s. As PO Ackley stated optimum powder capacity for most efficient load.

Do you remember the first centerfire rifle you fired and do you reload for that caliber today?

1917 Winchester Enfield 30-06 just out of college For $150. Straighten floor plate, buehler mount & 4x scope. Now have a plethora of 06’s and still reload for all of em.

    Where do you hunt?

I was blessed to have Grandparents as farmers and started by shooting sparrows for .05 cents each with ratshot at the local grain coop. That led me to some awesome invites, but that was 50 years ago. Texas is 97% privately owned, so so public lands, but as you guessed crowded. I've hunted as...

    .308 for Hogs

Any rifle will work, shot placement & penetration is all you need. On an eradication (Hahaha, never eradicate) I used a single shot in 30/06, taking 11 with 9 cartridges. Blessed that day! I was patient and line up shots like grandpa taught me. Have fun!

    Ruger No. 1

I love the #1's, 280 Remington, 30-06 & 35 Whelan in A's and a 257 Robert Ackley in B model. All do me a minute, two have Hicks accurizer and one shop made with set screw on hanger. The shop made one is on the "B" will give me 1/2" groups!
