NEW POLL: Will your next rifle scope be MOA or MIL

My most recent build was with a Bushnell Tactical Elite XRS scope with the G2 reticle and I've really liked using it, especially for windage holdovers. All of my long range gear and processes have converted to support MIL and future builds will follow suit. I don't yet have the familiarity and...

Know of any good elk hunting books/magazines so I can educate myself?

The Complete Book of Elk Hunting Tips and Tactics for All Weather and Habitat Conditions Rocky Mountain Elk Foundation, Sam Curtis, published by Lyons Press 2005. This covers the whole range of elk hunting. Pretty much required reading on the subject IMHO. The Ultimate Guide to Elk Hunting...

When all else fails...go to the NP!

"Close" is a relative term in the west as you may know :) No I am closer to Steamboat than Gunnison, but only just. Due to my remote central location in Colorado almost anywhere is a long ways for me...but when you live where I do you don't need to travel much! :D

    Portable targets for practice?

Thanks all for the suggestions so far. It looks like I'm not off base anyway with what I'm already doing. Some good ideas for increasing the size of the target, thanks! As an aside here is a link to the USFS site with the regulations for my immediate area where I shoot most frequently and why...

    Alcohol stove???

I'm looking forward to your field report as well. 10 mins is a long time to boil water in the field...but the cost is certainly right! :) Your boil time is consistent with what I found when I made mine too. Good luck on your hunt and field experiment!

    Portable targets for practice?

I'd appreciate some input on what you all use for LR practice targets, specifically those of you who hike your targets out to the shooting location. Apologies if this is covered elsewhere. I looked for a similar posting but didn't find one. I have been using a 12" square Shoot-N-C target...

When all else fails...go to the NP!

It just occurred to me that this forum has a worldwide audience and everyone may not know what all of the critters above are. From the top are: Coyote, Yellow-bellied Marmot, Wapiti ("Elk", cervus elaphus nelsoni). While in the national park this also borders GMU20 where I live. It is a good...

When all else fails...go to the NP!

Hi Bigbuck, thanks! No, Rocky Mtn National Park is north-central Colorado. All of it is north of I-70 (the highway splitting CO in half N to S). It is worth a drive to though if you are anywhere in the state. Guaranteed photos/video of a large herd during the rut (late Aug/Sept typically)...

When all else fails...go to the NP!

Thought I'd share a few pics from a hike from this past August. It's always good, no matter how tough hunting has been to go to Rocky Mtn National Park to get a look at what I need to see! The elk were into the rut and this particular bull just about made me have an accident in my shorts. His...

Horses As I See Them By Ian McMurchy

I too have been raised around horses but I never took a liking to them the way my father did. I have no fear of them and actually enjoy them until I have to get on one. For me I figure it is the battle of wills thing...I'm just not into it when I'm in the outdoors. I want to relax and soak...

    Ski Poles ???

I denied their usefulness for many years but for hauling heavy loads they should be considered mandatory even on a good trail. When the legs get tired the poles can save a nasty stumble/fall. For backpacking in general above treeline in Coloradfo I'd also highly recommend the collapsible...

    Alcohol stove???

I'm with allen_b on this one..just too much fussing with them for my tastes. I've made the soda can versions on several occassions and while they do "work" they are not good for high altitude & wind unless you want to spend a lot of time making high-speed stoves which seems to defeat the point...

    Shooting in Colorado

There looks to be a good number of shooters in the north eastern Colorado area that would be interested in getting together from what I've read in this thread. Has anyone attempted to organize anything or have any of you met up yet? Let the rest of us know how it went and if you are planning...

    Intro from Northern Colorado

Hi All, I'm a 41 year old Colorado native currently living in the middle of the Roosevelt national forest (GMU 20) on 5 private acres that we frequently share with black bear, elk, moose (saw first one in this area last spring!), mule deer, turkeys, ermine, cotton tail rabbit, lynx, skunk...

Why no love for the A bolt?

Hey Leatherman..what can you tell me about this rifle? I am considering the same rifle (stainles stalker) for LH (so few available). I already have a 500 yd rifle though so this would be for longer range shots on high country elk primarily. How was yours to shoot? Thanks for any info.
