    legal longest barrel on pistal

Re: legal longest barrel on pistol What? There's no confusion here. A pistol is a handgun. You cannot legally convert a rifle to a handgun. There are no loop holes. Even with Encore's and Contenders. If it was shipped from the factory as a RIFLE, it's a rifle and cannot be legally converted to...

Don't know. Contact HS. Probably 1-12

    WSSM Encore

The issue is not chamber pressure. The problem is rearward thrust. WSM's and WSSM's are fat cases and produce a great deal of "bolt thrust" or "rearward thrust". Can the Encore reciever handle it? They're great guns but I wouldn't trust it.

There's no Federal limit that I know of. Some states may have limits though I don't know what they would gain or think they're gaining by it. I live in Indiana also. I mainly stick to my XP in 308 Win. It has a 17" barrel.

    What are you shooting?

You were arguing. Now you're back stepping. But you hit the point correctly in that no one pays much attention to Contenders and Encores. That is unless you talk about it, post pictures, etc. Don't be fooled into thinking these forums aren't watched. Again, no one pays much attention. However...

    What are you shooting?

Yes you can swap them back and forth all day, legally, if the Contender or Encore was sold as a handgun. If it said "RIFLE" on the box, you can't LEGALLY convert it. If it was sold as a rifle, it's a RIFLE. And it's illegal to convert a rifle to a handgun.

    What are you shooting?

Don't be hard headed. She bought it over the counter, right? Right. It was manufactured and serial numbered as a HANDGUN so it's legal as a HANDGUN. We're talking about converting rifles to handguns. It's not legal unless it's BATF/NFA approved, period, no matter how much we wish it was.

    What are you shooting?

Since when is an AR pistol completely legal? Register it as NFA firearm and then it's legal. Any clown that's taking a "rifle" receiver, and turning it into a handgun without the Bureau of NAZI's (BATF) knowledge is breaking the law. They'll probably never find out unless you get into some...

    What are you shooting?

Bill, you can't legally do that. If it's a rifle, it's a rifle. Even new in the box receivers that have never been barrelled are "rifles". I have three new, in the box receivers. Two 700's, and one Dakota. On the box, next to the serial number, they all read, "RIFLE ACTION". I've contacted...

Agreed. If it doesn't need it, I certainly won't open it up. No, I don't think Remington receivers are case hardened. They're much easier to face in the lathe than military 98's

shot the HS 270 WSM this morning!!

That's what I was thinking. I don't care how good you think it shoots, if you can't hit the dime, it's a boat anchor. That's a nice piece for sure and shoots as good as it looks.

You're of course right about the locking lug recess area. .100" won't effect it though. I was thinking you were concerned about cutting through the case hardening.

Kirby, tell me why you don't advise lengthening the ejection port. I've never done one but was planning on opening up the ejction port on an XP by about .100" for a 325 WSM project.

XP's were made in one receiver length. However, they're stiff enough, due to the solid left side of the receiver, that you can open the ejection port and shorten the bolt stop enough to accommodate 30-06 length cartridges
