    Trouble shooting

I may have jumped the gun a little. No pun intended. It has been a hectic week LOL The gunsmith took apart the bolt and everything was fine except for a lot of excess heavy oil. We cleaned it up and that eliminated the problem. The smoke, I think was do to the light fog and misty conditions...

    Trouble shooting

I just had a 6-6.5x47 Lapua built. The 2 loads I have worked with so far are 39 and 40gr of H-4350 with cci 400 primers behind 105 Bergers. No pressure signs are evident and both loads shot good but I have been getting what I would conceder excessive smoke. This may not be a problem but I...

    6.5 twist?

Thanks for the responses guys. Have the 8.5 on the way. Next question would be what kind of velocity should be expected out of a 26 inch finished length with the Sierras?. My friend is also building a rifle in the same caliber and is making his with a 26- inch barrel. I am leaning towards a...

    6.5 twist?

I am building a 6.5x284 this spring and have found an 8.5 twist barrel but I am not sure that it will stabilize the longer 140gr bullets. Will this twist stabilize the 142gr Sierras or should I go with a 1 in 8 to be sure? Thanks. Q,

    South African gun smith wanted.

Does anyone know of a long range gunsmith in South Africa? I have a good friend that lives there and is looking for a top hand to put together his next rifle. Any contact information would be great. Thanks and good hunting. Q,

    A-Max in 22-250 - hunting Roedeer

The only shooting I have ever done with the 52gr A-max was in Africa. I shot a couple dozen mongooses with them out of a friends 22-250 AI. The muzzle velocity was 4035 out of that rifle. We saw no difference in explosive capabilities between that and my .220 swift with 55gr BTs at 3840 fps...

    "Inherent accuracy"...

The only thing missing to this thread is a set of standards in which to measure the inherent values of the given cartridge. At the 100-yard line with a 60 some odd grain bullet the PPC and its variations stand-alone. I think that the principals behind the PPC variations are sound. “Short and...

    Story time

Wow! I won something! That doesn’t happen to me very often. LOL I would like to thank everyone that voted for me and I hope to share more stories with you guys in the future. Len did you get my e-mail? I sent you one a couple days ago but have not heard back. I don’t really spend that much...

    Story time

I am running a 55gr BT at 3900fps. When you figure in recoil, noise, accuracy and bullet choice I keep coming back to the swift with that load. About 90% of the coyotes I shoot are 400 yards or under so you are hard pressed to find a factory offering that does that well in terms of flatness...

    Story time

Thanks guys, I am glad you enjoyed it. I had a custom reticle put in my 3.5-10x50 Leupold by Premier tailored to my load. My rifle is a custom swift. I wish I had time to do a write up on long-range baboon hunting in Africa. That is the ultimate long-range challenge!! Fur season is over for...

I am not for sure where to put this story so you can move it where it needs to be. Better Lucky than good.... Earlier this winter I had one of those days that make me a believer in the old saying that it is better to be lucky than to be good. Although...

    Flat Base versus Boat tail

A bullets accuracy starts at the base and moves forward. I think that a lot of the problems (not all) when dealing with boat tale bullets are found in the barrels crown. In my experience I have found that a perfect crown on a barrel is critical to the accuracy potential of both the rifle and...
