58-59 grn of 15 with the 225 nos part is hard to beat as is 59-60 grn of varget with the same bullet. Both powders also work well in the .375 h&h as well.
I've hunted slot with the whelen. I've killed whitetails and elk (as well as ground squirrels, little light for them). I've used a small variety of makes and weights from 225-250 in hornady interlocks (both sprp and rn, love both) Speer 250 hotcors rem corlocks, and nosler partitions in 225...
My favorite load is a 225 partition on top of 60 grns of varget with a cci 200. Excellent accuracy and velocity (2800) out of my rifle. I have killed elk at 400 yrds with this load and it will exit even on a quartering shot. Last one was a big cow, bullet entered behind the last rib on left...
I have a Ruger m77mkll in 35 whelen. It has factory iron sights and the boat paddle stock, with aleupold vxll 2-7 (long version) it weighs 8#s with light weight sling. It's very accurate.
I normally pass on bucks this size (come to think of it, this is the smallest one I have shot in 15 yrs) but our county only has one two doe days on NF and both are days I have to work.
I've been hunting with mine all week here in the mountains of sw va in some really steep and nasty country. As steep and nasty as what I am accustomed to in North Idaho. I've found places where I am able to get a couple of miles from roads believe it or not. Point being the more I pack this...
Yeah, I'm not much on weatherbys myself. I haven't shot this rifle in over ten years. I have no sentimental attachment to it so it my just go down the road.
You bet. It's a great cartridge, probably my favorite. The load I mentioned is very accurate and flat shooting. Very similar trajectory to a 30-06 with 180's. Lat yearyears elk was a mature cow @200 yards. Bullet broke right front shoulder and exited left rear quarter after breaking the...
Here's another vote for the h&h. I have one of the new m70 Alaskan's (bought new in 2013) that I have hunted with a lot since I've had it. It has accounted for whitetails and elk in North Idaho. I cut and crowned the barrel @ 21" and couldn't be happier with it. I only lost 80fps with my...
What did it wind up costing if you don't mind me asking? Does the mk.v need to be trued or are they normally good to go? What about the lugs? I can only imagine the pain of have nine to do.
