    Berger bullets

I’ve had great luck with Berger VLD’s, 6 elk and 6 deer in the last 4 years between my wife and kids and all but one dropped in it’s tracks. The one elk that didn’t took 10 steps and laid down and took another to the neck which probably was not needed. Hit behind the shoulder and they work...

7-300 wins the 1100 yard match!

If you ever do decide to build another and want a 7mm I would seriously look at the 280AI. IMO the 280AI really isn’t a wildcat anymore since Nosler remarketed it a few years back. Brass or even factory rounds can be picked up at most sporting good stores now. Excellent case life and a very...

    Berger vld hunting or hybrid?

I’m shooting 168gr regular VLD’s out of a 280AI. The rifles killed deer at 20 yards and 80 yards, elk at 20-300 yards all had great results. I’ve got the best accuracy .010 off the lands.

    What caliber?

I’ve killed just as may elk with a .243 as any other weapon. I would never tell anyone it’s too small to hunt elk with, I’ve seen them kill way too many. I purchased both my kids 10 & 13 a 6.5 Creedmoor for an all around rifle. Personally I shoot a 280AI when I hunt with a rifle. I’ve killed...

280 Ackley Improved loads for Idaho Elk

I know this is an old thread but I’m shouting 168gr Berger VLD’s, shooting 63gr of Retumbo which is a compacted load, BR2 primers, .010 off the lands. This load has worked out very well for me. Shooting a 25” barrel at 2940fps with zero pressure issues. The rifle has killed 2 deer and 4 elk in...

    7mm-08 or 6.5

I would go for the 6.5, i bought both of my boys 9 & 12 Kimber Hunters this summer for there birthdays and they love shooting them. You can load them down to have less recoil than the .243 and still be capable of killing game. My 12yr old is shooting Berger OTM 130's and my 9yr old is shooting...

    Mark X .243 Mauser 98 for sale

Wanting to sell this rifle to help fund a new 6.5 kimber Hunter for my son. Rifle is an Innerarms Mark X, there is marks in the bluing from corrosion in the past? Overall I would say the rifle is a 6/10? Not really rifle grader but it’s in pretty decent shape overall and the action is smooth...

Best shooting sticks for elk hunting?

I also think the primos tripod or single stick works great. I hunt in the sagebrush and there is no trees around. Not having a good shooting stick cost my son a 180 class buck this year, all that was on the rifle was a 13-23" and the sage brush was about 3 feet deep all around us. He can't...

I did end up going, was a bust. I did go back in Nov with my bow and shot a ok 4 point buck. Saw lots of wolves in the middle fork and a few elk way out on the breaks of the salmon.

    400 yard deer rifle.

280 Remington, its an 06 with a 7mm (.284) bullet. Kicks similar to a 30-06 depending on bullet weight. You can find a used 700 mountain rifle for around $600 now and then on line which are really fine rifles. IMO the 280 Remington is about the best all around factory chambered cartridge...

Are you gonna shoot LR at game this year?

I would feel very comfortable at 600 yards in fairly decent conditions. If i can't get closer and conditions are favorable then I would feel confident out to 800 yards. I plan on getting as close as I can before making the shot but am hunting in very steep rough terrain that is not favorable...

    6.5x284 or .280ai

I will give you my opinion on these calibers. The 280AI out performs the 6.5 x 284 across the board on anything 140gr or higher. If you plan on shooting 140gr bullets the 280AI will have about 500lbs more energy at the muzzle and will shoot flatter, this will come at the cost of slightly...
