Yeah I also have a 6.5 prc barrel for the same action and shoots amazing but it was so frustrating the time and money wasted on that paper weight of a barrel. I wanted to take the 300 wsm on my elk hunt but instead the 6.5 prc is going with me. I did buy a new .30 cal barrel but havent had it...
I had a 300 wsm proof barrel chambered by a reputable gunsmith only to find out after a frustrating 5-6 months and 250-300 rds later it wasnt cut true. Wouldnt shoot sub 1.5” (5 shot group) with any load after trying 3 different powders, 4 different bullets and 3 shooters.
Currently run a 300 wsm in defiance deviant XM with 3.24” max mag length and 26” 1:9 proof but just bought a 20” 1:10 for more compact hunting setup. It was originally SAAMI but added freebore to shoot 195 badlands and 205 berger elite hunters in the 26”. Havent had the 20” to the gunsmith yet...
I bought an unfired full setup on SH for $3600 + $1900 for leupold mk5 and rings
Defiance Deviant XM LH
Proof carbon barrel 1:8” 26” 6.5 PRC
Manners T4A
Hawkins M5 Bottom Metal
Triggertech Diamond
Apa Little Bastard
I have 10lbs of N560 ready to rock for load development but like you mention with terminal performance at close range is why I started this whole question with the 156s. Thanks for your answer and reply…much appreciated.
I have 1:8 twist so the 135 may not stabilize but I thought of them…from what ive been told overspinning is better for monos
Leupold mk5 5-25 Pr2-mil…same reticle as my comp rifle.
I have a load for 156 bergers that ive taken out to 1100 yards (only have access to 650 currently) but like @membt I may be overthinking it as I have no experience with elk…only whitetail and mule deer.
I ordered some 124 HH and have 156 bergers so ill have options to load for and check between the two loads if there is a POI change and possibly have a HH on top ready for close shots and the gun zeroed with the 156 bergers for anything that is 200+ yards.
