7mm STW Brotherhood - For those who shoot the 7mm Shooting Times Westerner

I Have hunted with a STW in a Rem. Custom Shop mountain rifle for 15 years or more. It has a Burgess brake that I haven't had on the gun for just about as many years. Topped with a 3-12x50 Swaro Hab. The gun bare comes in at under 5 3/4 lbs. It's the older real light weight McMillan stock...

    Nightforce vs. U.S. Optics?

That ain't no NF under that truck. It gets a little old hearing about how there is no difference.

    Shelf life

If you see green around the bullet at the neck. Don't shoot it. Other than that, 30 years in cardboard and in the house, a lifetime if it's in a sealed container and dry environment.

Vortex Viper PST vs Weaver Tactical

I don't think many scopes have Schott glass, just the high end and not even all of them. March is Jap, Sightron is Jap. , Vortex is Jap. etc... Lord only knows how many are chinese.

    super tight chamber??

The cases I have had stick from being to large in the od really stick. And the bolt opens until the extractor hits the rim and then stops like it hit a wall. A case that is head spaced too long will just cause a hard bolt lift from the beginning of it's movement until the pressure comes off...

    IPHY, so I guess neither.

    New Sightron SIII MOA

I think this is the second time I have seen the 6-24 sightron being degraded a bit for it's glass. The other thread (where ever it was) had many comments about it only being on that scope, not their others. FWIW.

    Filing down FMJ'S bullets

I had a bunch of 180's that I made into 170 lever gun bullets the same way. 30-30 is slow but they shot great.

    h1000 vs retumbo

Retumbo is a bit slower burning.

    Montana Lake Trout

I hit the whitefish in the fall and the pike pretty hard right after freeze up. Just lost my taste for fishing lakers for awhile. Pics like those perk my interest though. :)

    Factory ammo blowing out primers?

Doesn't take many of those to cut your bolt face up. Email the manufacturer photos and ask for a new box. They frequently send extras.

    2 dumb questions

It's nothing to do with handloads vs. factory. It's to do with powder burn rates, port pressures as well as how much powder. Like I said before Sierra has a chapter devoted to the differences. It's a good read. I believe Speer also has a separate section for gas guns. This is all pretty old...

    22/6mm bullets blowing up

You would need some shallow button rifling in a 6 or 7 land barrel. Deforming the jackets less but still enough to spin them up. Or shoot solids.

    2 dumb questions

Bart, I agree commercial 308 loads should be safe in gas guns. Handloads are a different story. Sierra has the best load data for both in their manuals now. The 223 has always been safe in a 5.56. But in the 70's and 80's there was "the broken bolt club" for ar's. The higher pressures of the...

    2 dumb questions

You do not shoot bolt gun .308/7.62 loads in a gas gun. As stated .308 and 7.62 are the same. 5.56 and .223 are not. The shorter tighter throat on a .223 can pinch the bullet as the brass stretches into the throat. I don't think it has ever been a problem in a bolt gun but it has been in an AR.
