Ditto. While I have killed many elk with magnums and 308, my last 20 years have been with an old Remington 700 mountain rifle in 280. Perfect elk gun. Very accurate and quite light enough for this 76yr. old hunter.

Quit screwing around and get a good Leupold. I have the 4.5x14 on 3 30cal magnums and these scopes do not fail.

For many years I have hunted with the older Remington Mountain Rifles, bedded wood stock, pencil barrel. 270 & 280. Both put the first 3 shots in .6-.75". Settled on the Leupold VX3 4.5x14 on both. There is nothing wrong with a 270. I killed my first 7 bull elk with a 270 and the 130 Remington core lock. I still use a lightweight 270 as my carry gun but use my 300 Wby for my longer range stand shooting. There is some sharp recoil with the 270 but by holding the gun against my shoulder...
