After all these years, I've finally made up my mind. I'd bring a 40mm with one round in it and spend the rest of the time doing calculations so it would hit me like a lawn dart when I fired it up into the air.

It’s just an aid to something g you were already doing. It makes it faster and easier when verifying drops and also makes you use less rounds for the drop verification.

I’d load a dummy round up to your desired COAL and see what measurement that gives you. If it works in the short action then go for it. If it doesn’t give enough clearance in the short action then you will know. I think most factory ammo is loaded around 2.955” for the 140 Gr Berger.
