    458 SoCom AR

I’ve also run one for years without issue. I mostly run heavy subsonics, 410 to 500gr. Like others have said, a big bore upper is needed and an adjustable gas port helps with keeping brass nearby. I also use a brass catcher. One advantage with the SOCOM is a standard mag holds 10 rounds. If one...

    Model 70

My mid-1990’s FN XPR/PBR 308 shoots in the threes. It’s pillar bedded in a McMillan. My straight stock 7mm Mag shot less than an inch. I can’t vouch for the brand new ones, but all of the ones that I have had since the 1980’s have been great out of the box shooters with hand loads.

    Blast from the past II

Nice buck! I still use that same camo. I’ve tried newer, but the bdus seem to resist thorns and barbwire the best.

    NM Draw

For NM it’s $29 for required hunting license and stamps to apply, followed by a non refundable $7 per species draw fee. All the upfront tag fees are refunded if not drawn.

    NM Draw

As a resident, I always put in for everything. Neither I nor six of my coworkers drew anything. I console myself with the probability that I wouldn’t have had time to go this year anyway. It also gives me more time for load development.

    When is enough, enough.....

It’s when you look around and decide that you don’t want to die with all this stuff and saddle your survivors with the disposal. Most things go for pennies on the dollar and reloaded ammo is just used components.

Anybody hunting with a 17 Hornet and if so what's your take on it.

I’ve shot and hunted with 17 HMR, 17 Hornet, and 17 Rem. All were excellent shooters, typically 0.5 moa, very little recoil, and low noise. They all killed, but I was never impressed with terminal performance beyond 75 to 100 yards on any of them. I like “red mist” on pdogs, and I prefer to hit...

    Solo backpackers ???

I agree with folks that a solo hunt is truly satisfying. When I go solo, I typically don’t go as far afield - either back to the truck at night if I travel far or maybe a day’s hike or so in if I stay a couple hours from home. One needs to be a little better prepared and a little more careful...

What got you interested in long range hunting?

Shooting prairie dogs is my favorite type of long range “hunting”. As a bonus, the gear needed is less expensive, and it is great practice.

Behind enemy lines in CA. Need to escape. Need help

I’m likely an anomaly here - I’m a total liberal, but I love guns, shoot, reload, carry, and hunt. Don’t fish so much because I currently live in the mountains and don’t care for freshwater fish. Mostly me and my liberal gun friends just want to be left alone. My biggest issue ie people. Every...

Getting in mountain shape with no mountains around?

Altitude is rough. I live at 7,000 ft and thought I was in decent shape. Last bull I killed was at 10,500 ft and it kicked my butt. One key factor is water. The higher you go, the more you will need. Keeping hydrated will help significantly so make sure you account for extra water in your pack.

Do we overvalue sentimental value of our guns?

Great posts - as I get older, I see the collection disposals more and more. I learned from my grandpa and dad that guns are tools. Buy what you like and the best you can afford and take care of them. I sold most of their stuff because I had better “tools”. I kept the guns that were not worth...
