I’d still be hunting with the 22/250 but it was passed down to my son (who is putting it to very effective use) and I’m using my 220 Swift. (Not a bad fall back on caliber.)
Pretty traditional here - H4350 behind Nosler 100gr BT as well as Scirroco 100gr which incidentally accounted for the Whitetail in the adjacent picture. I figure, “If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it”.
As Alibiiv indicated, maybe he and I are just the two luckiest people an earth, but I only have 4 Ruger 77’s left, but none of them are going anywhere. A 243AI; a 250 Savage AI; a classic 257 Roberts; and a wonderful 308. All have been tuned and refined with their best loads, and shoot “lights...
My dad was taught by his dad, and he in turn taught me. There were very few deer available in our area so my first deer was not taken till I was in my late teens. It wasn’t a trophy by any means but I was proud and my dad was proud of me. Spin the clock ahead and I taught my son and we now lived...
Question for you Weaver93; how much improvement did you see when you AI’ed your 260. I did that to my 243, my 250 Savage, and my 25:06. Considering AI’ing my 260 and my 7:08.
Got to agree with Panhandle Pete on the 250AI. So very underrated, but your 300 yard distance and Whitetails are taylor made for the 250AI. Now I’d you really want to step up the quarter bore, my 25 Gibbs will outdo my 25:06AI by quite a bit. But I still shoot the 250AI on my Idaho Whitetails...
If you’ll pardon the sacrilegious expression; you don’t NEED a 300 anything to effectively kill - just ask the elk or deer thats’s fallen to a perfectly placed arrow. Now that that’s out of the way, choose what you want and shoot what you choose well. My 9 year old grandson took a 4x4 Blacktail...
All the scope recommendations are good. It’s just a matter of what fits YOU better than anything else. Try as many as you can for co parison. And as an aside, I grew up on the eastern shore of Maryland and have many fond memories do growing up and hunting there. Good luck.
As a kid, I was able to hunt with a gun just like that one and although I tried my best to buy it, the man who owned it would never sell it to me. When he passed away all his guns went to his kids who (I found out to late) sold them all for practically nothing because none of them inherited his...
I had a beautifully stocked 22:250 that shot lights out… When I discovered an equally beautifully stocked Mauser action, Shilen barreled 220 Swift, I passed the 22:250 on to my son to help enlarge his developing collection. It joined the custom 30:06 and the tricked out 10:22. That way the...
To my 22lr, my 17mach2 is considered high velocity. To my 250/3000 at 3000fps, my 220 Swift at 4000fps is considered high velocity. But theses terms include the case and the powder. So the definition will vary with the experience and technological ability of the reader/responder. Hence, very...
The 25:06AI has been a favorite rifle for years and has accounted for deer from 95 to 525 yards. After trying several bullets, I settled on the Barnes and Swift bullets several years ago and haven’t looked back. As many others have said - shot placement is key to lack of blood shot meat.
