    Traditional Shooters

I have always been and will always remain a traditional black powder shooter. Not quite all traditional, but nothing other than patched balls... I shoot a Lyman GPR in .54, 1-60 twist, 32 in. Bbl. and have good luck using G.I. cotten cleaning patches (4in. cut into 1in. squares for my...

Do you hunt with a clean bore?

My son and I use Hawken style percussions in .50 & .54 caliber; Patchball and Pyrodex. I have always favored a "once fired" bore when hunting bear or deer as it offers more reliable ignition, making sure that no oil has remained in the breech! We have a few other "reliable ignition" tricks up...

What makes a bullet a good bullet?

"Bear Grylls" would have ate them eyes! :D

What makes a bullet a good bullet?

For big game shooting where destroying edible meat is not desirable, and being one who recommends shooting any big game animal intended for the freezer through the lungs, I would say that a "good" bullet is one that delivers violent rapid expansion in the lung cavity area! Nosler Ballistic Tips...

    Free Floating Problem

I have an "old School" reply for this particular condition. First of all, pressure beds (where upward pressure is applied to the Bbl at the stock forend) were often used to tame barrel harmonics and vibration. The risk with using this method is absorbtion of moisture in the stock and resulting...

25-06 Good for 400 yd mulies?

I was just discussing this caliber with my brother who has been shooting it for a number of years. He shoots long range frequently on his cattle ranch in hunting deer and coyotes. He reports that 4 years ago, he shot a muley buck at a lazered 525 yards with his Ruger M77 in 25-06 using...

I need help deciding wich remington 700 to get.

The SPS will be much more "field friendly" especially at the end of a long days hunt. If most of your time will be spent shooting from prone or a bench and you will rarely carry the rifle any real distance, the sendero has a lot to offer. Sporter weight barrels in sporter weight rifles shoot...

.243 wich powder with 85 gr Barnes TSX

Our best work with this caliber with 90-105 grain bullets has been with IMR-4350. I think the recommendations for a faster burning powder with the lighter bullet is good advice and Varget or IMR-4064 would be about optimum. I lean towards IMR.

    Wich .300 magnum?

Personally, I would look at a standard weight and type of hunting rifle for my .308 caliber magnum for any long range hunting. There is no reason to carry a rifle that weighs over 8.5-9 pounds for open country deer hunting. I would lean towards the 1963 vintage 300 Winchester Magnum in Remington...

I currently reside on the "right" (east) side in Spokane, Wa. I look forward to participating in discussions on topics here. My son is now 14 and he has been raised a hunter and shooter. My wife had been an avid handgunner until she became ill and does not shoot as often as she once did. We...
