    short vs long mag

OK good stuff, many thanks! Years ago when I bought a rifle for an elk hunt (my first magnum) I got a Tikka T3 Lite in 300 WSM, as opposed to 300 WM, because of those very things. Good to have them re-confirmed. Had to add a brake, though!

    short vs long mag

Phil, Thanks for the reply. What would you list those differences as being? I would appreciate your input.

    short vs long mag

I just ambled over to Hornady's ballistic calculator and entered in a 180 grain bullet with a BC of 0.4 and a speed of 3000 fps (about a normal 300 WSM load) and 80 fps faster, or a normal 300 WM load. The difference is about 35 yards, meaning if you get 35 yards closer to your target with the...

    Best Value 223/556 Barrel?

Have built two Odinworks barrel/bolt/BCG combos in 6.5 Grendel. They were on Ebay as kits. Squared the upper receiver to the barrels and added a 2 stage RRA trigger and that is about it. Photos of the 2 rifles' performance at about 50 rounds. Penny pics are 5 shots, not counting fouler, at 100...

    10mm handgun

I am in upper Star Valley, WY, a mile from Idaho, we spend a lot of time over on Diamond Creek and Blackfoot River. No griz around Star Valley yet or west into Idaho that I have heard of yet, nor wolves. Cats are getting bold though.

Thoughts on dead air nomad l

Just got my Hyperion out of jail. Wow. The Hyperion outperforms the Nomad according to PewScience data. The .308 by a little (52.3 overall rating vs. Nomad's 52), the 6.5 Creed by a lot (58.2 overall). The TB Ultra 9 in .308 got a 46.1. https://pewscience.com/rankings

    Savage/stevens 555 28ga forcing cone damage

My 28 gauge CZ clone side by side said to not use steel/tungsten in the two tightest chokes, but I bought an aftermarket Carlson's full choke that is guaranteed to accept that kind of shot without damage. Found it at www.choketubes.com.

Trying to get smart boar hog

Reason this drew them is that the soapy water drove all the worms and grubs up to the surface, they don't like soap. Hogs root mostly to get at grubs and worms.

    Is the .17WSM dead?

Awesome varmint cartridge, and a "new" concept for us curmudgeons, like the 25-3000 (which was the first commercial cartridge that hit 3000 fps (with an 85 grain projectile) in around 1900. The .17 WSM was based on the construction-designed concrete nail gun rimfire cartridge, and they put a...

    458 SoCom AR

Had one for many years, don't use it much any more. RRA upper I bought during a time when they "were gonna ban assault rifles" and RRA must have been running their tooling too long. Chamber looked like coarse sandpaper. I found a purpose built bolt, not one of the reamed out 5.56 ones. Got the...

Talk me into or out of buying a suppressor, please.

OK here we go. You asked for it. No. 1. I find it interesting that you come here, talk bad about other retailers, and then offer your "better services" to the people reading here. 2. You said "Yeah. SS [Silencer Shop] has obliterated most of the independent businesses, so I am not surprised...

Talk me into or out of buying a suppressor, please.

Do you do the new electronic applications with ATF? My experience with Silencer Shop was very positive in that regard. As I said above, there are no silencer dealers within several hundred miles of me; so I went through SS and a local FFL who had a contract with them. If I had just gone through...

Talk me into or out of buying a suppressor, please.

I really like the Silencer Shop's customer service and online support. For example, I live in Wyoming, where there are few places to buy suppressors, but using their online system and support made it easy. I just drove to Jackson where they had a kiosk in a sporting goods store, that machine...

    Update on the Super Pigs

You are right, the live or evergreen oaks in Texas are not Quercus ilex, the Mediterranean oak, or Q. rotundifolia, another southern European variety, which are the oaks in Spain, Italy, southern France where those delicious pigs are raised. The Eurpopean live or evergreen oaks are, however...

    Update on the Super Pigs

I have had the same experience. Big old boars taste fine but smell bad, and cleaning a wild pig that has been gut shot is really unpleasant. My avatar picture is 3 we got in a wild afternoon shoot just west of Graham in Young County, TX. The best wild pig I ever got was in a heavy acorn year...
