    Kids hearing protection

I don’t take ‘em out until after they’ve memorized and understand the four rules, so mine have been about eight years old or so when they’re first exposed to live fire. (Started with safe handling and cartridge reloading before they could walk though.) Long story short, they get the same Impact...

    Case lube removal

Without knowing his load data, chamber dimensions, etc. the most logical conclusion is that he’s over-pressure for one or more of the conditions he’s shooting in. (If everything with the reloaded cartridges triple-checks out, I’d have a look at the bore and check for a carbon ring or similar...

    AR-10 / LR308 bolt gas ring fit?

I didn’t pay much attention to diameters when I was installing my JP bolt for my 260, nor was I paying much attention at all during re-installation after cleaning it, which brings me to; BE CAREFUL DURING REASSEMBLY. The end of the single-piece gas ring from the JP hung up on my carrier and was...

Odd - primers blown out bolt jam

Do you have a bore-scope? Betcha there’s a carbon ring or similar in the leade. Weatherbys have a pretty long free bore to tolerate the extra pressure they run, if there‘s something tightening up that free bore you’ll certainly have pressure issues. Something as simple as a treatment with JB...

    Long heavies in .280AI/.284

I have a stock of 183 and 197 Sierras that I’ve used in my 280AI. Using IMR Enduron 8133 I got the 180s to just over 2900 and the 200s to mid 2700s from a 28” McGowen. Of course, these were loaded waaaay long to get to the lands and filled up the AICS magazines almost completely. Fun loads though.

    6.5 Barrel Life

Did a long action AR in 260 Rem a few years back. Under 600 rounds so far but already seeing fire-cracking in the throat. Mostly load development with three or four timed (for fun, not ‘real’ competition) UKD long range attempts. Currently the repeatability is still there, but I’ve started...

    Clean Loaded Brass?

    Double tap. Apologies.

    Clean Loaded Brass?

I’ve used acetone on a rag/paper towel to remove 45/45/10 from larger magnum boolets (44, 45, 50 cal) after loading them, just to keep any gunk from sticking to them. No harm (so far) in maximum loads (H110 for magnums and CFE-P in the Colt) in 44 Magnum, 45 Colt, and 500 S&W. I wouldn’t soak...

Old recipe deemed Unsafe in new manuals. Suggestions?

As others have rightly said; work up to it in your rifle. My 280 Ackley load uses a pile of Enduron 8133 powder with the bullet seated very long into the throat (Nearly 3.5” COAL) It shoots well, has very low SD, and produces velocities that I am after. But you’d likely never find it in a manual.

    308 Barnes 130 Grain TTSX/Ramshot TAC

Love TAC in heavy (190-208 grain match loads) 308, admittedly I don’t much experience with under 150 grainers though. Depending upon how recoil sensitive the shooter behind the trigger is, you’ll still be running pretty fast even with start loads. As another option; I do some reduced loads in...
