I use oak blocks in my vice, drilled out to around the smaller diameter of the bbl shank, the thicker part of the shank pushes the wood out for a good fit. I then use rosin to hold the bbl secure in the blocks, wont hold without the rosin (pine tar). Heard of people using icing sugar instead...
I like R22 powder in my 7mags with the 162 Amax, SST or interlock. I work up to just over 2900 to 3000fps with it, some were in between there I usulay find good accuracy. I found that lots of neck tension helps the 162 Amax and SST if not loading to the lands.
I have found the X bullets to be the best of the expanding solids. So if I want the terminal performance of an expanding solid these are what I choose.
I rarely if ever need an expanding solid so I would choose a Nosler Partition 99% of the time.
I have an SPS youth. They came with stock spacers to make the lenght of pull longer. I take it you dont have these? Anyways, a regular SPS stock for a short action will fit just fine. I put mine in a Mcmillan "compact" with short LOP and light weight recoil pad. Works well.
42g of R15 and a 178g Amax in a win case at 2.85OAL gives me 2535fps out of a factory Savage heavy bbl 26". Just shot it and checked speed yesterday. In the summer time that load is closer to 2600fps if i remember correctly.
Great accuracy, never shot fruther than 600yards though.
The real news here is they have a bullet that will now expand down to 1300fps. This alone adds range for the hunter. The 1300fps-3200fps is the biggest velocity window out there for a tipped AND limitited expansion bullet! All round great news, even if the BC's are way off.
Better if everyone used their brains.
Anyone can throw an idea out there even if they don't have the time to do all the testing. If it's a great idea there are people that will jump on it and try it out.
Oh and on the Vaseline, that one was from John Barsness when he had trouble...
FACT all bullets with a tiny hollow point and a thick copper jacket have a pile of threads and posts all over the Internet of bullets that didn't expand on game, doesn't matter if it is a Matchking, TSX or a Berger or anything else. It always seems that the smaller the hollow point and the...
So the Sinclair neck tuner is good? I like the looks of that run out gauge with the bearings and dial indicator, I think I will get one of those too.
My turning will just be to even out my neck thicknesses for uniformity. As it is I have 600-700 once fired Win brass that has varying...
Hey guys, I was just wondering what you use for neck turning and where I can order one. I am looking for something that is accurate, affordable and available.
Never neck turned before and I don't know much about it but it looks like I will have to turn 308 win cases down to .012 per side to...
