cartridges for wifes savage build. opinions?

I know you have the long action, but what about the .308 Win? Ballistics are almost identical to 30-06 but with less powder & recoil. You can build a 7-8 lb rifle that won't beat her up and with a 24" bbl have plenty of range..270 or .264 WM would be my next choices..284 ballistics don't do any...

270 WSM. vs. 243 Win. for kid

Bobby Hart thinks they are pretty good. I've had my model 7 16+ years with no issues. Bobby is the one that recommended it to me. The only improvement they need is a stock bedding job. I'm talking about the older ones. Not sure about current issues. The older ones are nicer looking with fewer...

270 WSM. vs. 243 Win. for kid

Thanks, I do reload and already have tons of .243 bullets and equipment, so I don't think I'd go to the 260. I found a used 7 in 243 with Leupold vx2 3-9x40 for$800

270 WSM. vs. 243 Win. for kid

The Model Seven is factory chambered for the 270WSM. I think to get the most out of the round they are seating the bullets pretty far out which means they won't fit in the Model Seven's magazine. If I seat the bullets in my .308 out to .010 from the lands they will not fit in the mag now. I am...

270 WSM. vs. 243 Win. for kid

Thanks for all of great info. The .308 model Seven I have is under 7 lbs with the scope. Recoil with 110gr bullets loaded down is bearable, but I don't want to cause her to start flinching. The rifle I get her will also be that light. What about loading the .270 wsm with a 6.8 lighter hunting...

270 WSM. vs. 243 Win. for kid

I'm getting a new rifle for my 12 yr old daughter who is 5'-3" @ 125#. Looking @ Micro A or X bolt & Model Seven. Where we hunt whitetail most shots are 100-200 yds. I know the .243 is adequate because I have one. I like what Im reading about the 270 Wsm plus it has alot more energy and range. I...

    kids gun advise

I would look @ the Model 7 in .270 WSM. They also make a compact model & the slightly heavier Predator with heavy fluted bbl in 308 & 7-08. Don't forget the 308 replaced the '06. It has 95% of the power with less recoil. I have a Model 7 in .308 & have a load for 168gr. Barnes Xlc BTHP's that...

    Model 7 .308 18-1/2"bbl. Rebarrel to 18 or 20"?

I have an older Model Seven in .308 that needs a new bbl. I have over 1500 rounds out of it and the bore has several spots that look like cracks and are pretty deep. So, the dilema is do I keep it real short or go 1.5" longer. Next, which contour? I am thinking 20" with a magnum sporter contour...

    .243 need help please

I had similar issues years ago with the original 90gr XBT. I scrubbed the barrel several times even soaking it over night to remove the copper. After that I got .25" groups for 15-20 rounds and then back to cleaning. My rifle is an old Rem 788 carbine w/18" bbl in 243. Clean clean clean & then...

    top deer caliber

I have an older Rem Model Seven in .308 w/18 1/2" bbl. I have some Barnes 168gr VLC BTHP's loaded with 43gr of Accurate 2230 chronod @ 2800 and have taken deer from 30yds in the thick brush to 275yds accross an open field and they all fall. It's topped by a Simmons Aetec 1.5-6X32 scope. Wish I...

Looking for a good flintlock for deer

Here in PA we have a 3 week flintlock/archery season after Christmas. I'm looking for the most accurate available. I want something that will shoot up to 150yds. With enough accuracy and knockdown. We also have to use open sights, no scopes. I have been looking at the Lyman Plains Hunter & TC...

    bolt wont close???

I've loaded for .325 WSM & had to buy a small base die to size once fired brass. It wouldn't chamber the regular full length sized brass. This was for a BLR which is a little finicky. I prefer Redding dies. They will also build dies specific for your rifle. Good luck

Model Seven .308 thinking about rebarrelling

I have a Model 7 I bought new in 1994 that is my deer rifle here in the thick woods of PA. It's not as accurate as it used to be. I have put over 3000 rounds through it, and killed all of my deer with that one gun. Looking to replace the 18" bbl with a 20" or 22" slightly heavier fluted bbl with...

Do Your Wife And/or Kids Hunt?

My wife has no interest. My 11 year old daughter loves it all. She shoots trap, rifles, and hunts anything and everything. She even wants to start trapping. Not sure if I want to tackle that. My 9 year old likes to shoot but does't want to hurt the animals.

    6MM vs 243 Rifle

The 6mm was a Remington developed cartridge. I don't recall the parent case. The .243 Winchester was Winchesters answer to the original .244 Remington, which is the same as the 6mm. The .243 is formed from the .308. You can use .244 Remington shells if you find them. The .244 worked better with...
