Indeed. One of us hopeless hobbyists with deeper pockets than myself needs to develop a precision barrel with a carbon fiber shell and a Haynes 214 or 230 liner. Then we'll be able to use and abuse the overbore wildcats. We'd need some slower double-base powders, too.
Or, maybe it's easier...
Without exception, when you decrease case capacity without changing caliber or radically altering case design you end up with a more efficient case. When pushed to equal max pressures using the same components and barrel lengths, the STW will always outpace a 7-300WM by a fairly small margin...
When forming from 300 Win Mag brass my necks were coming out pretty short, .210 or so. I switched to 300 H&H Mag brass trimmed down to 2.660 or so before fire forming. After fire forming my necks are now around .250-.260 with a case length of 2.650 or a little more. This version is a bit over...
Swampy,
My 7mm Valkyrie wildcat, at 93 gr H2O capacity, seems to like Reloader 50 as well as 33 behind the 180 Hybrids. Might want to try some in your larger LRH with the heavier pills.
There's a thread a few years old on temp sensitivity of RL33, started not long after this powder debuted. It's been a while but I recall it being better than most of the previous offerings in that regard. Search might turn it up.
I don't turn the necks on my improved 7-300 WM that I call the 7mm Valkyrie. I can also use trimmed .300 H&H for a longer neck and they come out to .312-.313 neck diameter when loaded. This is WW Super headstamp.
My reamer print shows a .316 neck diameter. If I do another one I'll reduce it...
Sorry to hear that but at least no one was hurt. For that big case and very heavy bullet, I would try H50BMG or Reloader 50. The latter will probably yield the highest velocities for a max load.
I'm told the concern isn't with the reduction in case capacity but rather the change in combustion behavior when the bullet shank is seated below the neck. It supposedly spoils the formation of the ideal combustion flame front at the neck. Someone here can probably give the history behind this...
