Supply and Demand! Years ago, Montana would set aside so many tags for non-residents. When the licenses went unsold, they would drop the price the following year. If the licenses sold out quickly the next year the price would be higher. That's the game they played until the system was...
For elk size and above I use a Wby 30-378. The recipe for that one is 180 gr. Accubond, 106 gr. IMR 8133, Win. WLRM primers for both. I'm getting 3350 fps and we're good out to 1100 yards. Of course not all rifles behave the same so use caution with my recipes. You know "sneak up on it!"
For my .257 Wby I use the 110 Accubond, 73.5 gr. Retumbo. My speeds are a hair under 3500 fps. Sighted in at 300 yards I'm ethical out to 650 yards. Beyond that the numbers for energy and speed drop off rapidly. I've never had an issue with that set-up.
I have 7 Tract scopes on rifles from 300 Weatherby to .22LR. Hunting in 9 states and 3 Canadian Provinces west of the Mississippi, I have been very pleased with the quality and performance of Tract Optics. IMO, dollar for dollar they are the best value in scopes and binoculars on the market...
Using the standard of 1200 ft lbs of energy combined with 1800 ft/sec for lead core bullets as the optimal performance for big game animals you would get the following results; 7mm Mag 160gr would make it out to 700 yards. A 300 Win Mag 180gr would get to 800 yards and a 30-378 Weatherby Mag...
I've had mounts loosen but have never knocked a scope out of alignment. To be on the safe side when I can't fire a round I carry a laser bore sight that goes in the end of the barrel. You only need a target 25 yards away to check if the cross hairs and the red dot merge to become one. Any...
Over the years I've taken many elk using Berger 185gr VLD's in my 300 Weatherby. My longest kill was 737 yards in OR. I used the 115gr Berger in my 257 Weatherby with two kills, one at 300 yards and the other at 330. The 180gr Accubond is also a great round. I used that this year in a...
IMO, I don't believe the Swarovski binos are that much better than Zeiss or Leica to warrant the extra cost. You know Swarovski gets a little more just for the name. I've been using Leica 10x42 and 15x56 for quite a few years now and they have been great. If you're going to shell out the...
Maybe you had a good hunt with this outfitter but I know people who didn't. Recommending an outfitter can be a crap shoot at best. Proceed with caution.
Electical tape can get sticky on the barrel. I've been using kids water balloons that are textured to look like grenades but they come in all shapes and colors in packages of 100 or more. So what if they don't last, just carry a bunch in your pocket.
