Where are you hunting turkeys this year.

I took my finale N. GA mountain tom Sunday. My girlfriend was taking a nap. 3's our limit. I'm done.

Where are you hunting turkeys this year.

I hunted public land in middle Georgia during the first two weeks of our season. I got 2 toms there. This weekend, I'm heading for the North Georgia mountains to hunt Nation Forest land to try to call in my girlfriend's 1st turkey for her and to fill my last remaining tag. I can hardly wait!

    which shotgun to go with?

3" loads are plenty effective and costs less too to find desired hunting pattern. Ported choke tubes might help a little to reduce recoil. Not the 25% reduction some claim, but probably 10-20%. You could check Old Gobbler forum to see different Rem. chokes/pattern reviews. I have a Carlson's...

Sounds great. OP--Upgrade to the .300 WM to begin with. You'll never regret it. JMHO.

    Rifle advice...

Look on the Savage website. Browse rifles. Pick the one you want. You'll be able to afford a nice scope too.

    which shotgun to go with?

So if Standbanger got his 870 barrel back bored and only shot 3" shells, it would probably pattern better with much more tolerable recoil. He could still kill more turkeys than he will be able to with a bow. Although I do truly love to bowhunt turkeys too. When I'm so busy working that I don't...

    which shotgun to go with?

Also you don't need 3.5" shells to kill turkeys just fine. Some 3" loads actually pattern better, depending on gun/choke, and their felt recoil is noticeably much less than 3.5"s. I'd only use 3.5"s for mid to long range waterfowl. They don't kick nearly like the turkey loads due to lower shot...

    Federal Strut-Shok?

That's not a bad pattern for 4's. It's hard to say whether FC wads would improve on that. You really just have to try a few loads to see what your gun likes. You'll definitely get more than a few into brain and spine with that. Probably even out to 40. All it takes is 1 pellet in the...

    which shotgun to go with?

I currently own four 870's, three 12 gauges and one 20 ga. You really can't go wrong with them. I've killed a ton of turkeys and never had a problem with any of them. They're not too heavy or bulky to haul around through any terrain. If I were getting one today to cover your described range of...

Savage 300wm or rem 300 um

Unless they've changed in the recent few years, Savage mag boxes won't fit rounds much beyond SAAM OAL specs. My buddy's .300 WM Sendero's mag box will. I still have a half box of 3.52" reloads he gave me that I have to single feed...but with .300 WM, who needs more than one anyway? I get great...

How Many Different Cartridges Do You Reload For?

I don't reload, but I'm fortunate to have a couple of buddies who share their reloads with me. Maybe I'm the guinea pig...:rolleyes:lightbulb Uh oh!

Savage 300wm or rem 300 um

300 UM is a monster, but you won't regret 300 WM for availability of ammo, parts and supplies. WM will do the job for less $ long term and long range. If you're ever in a remote area and need factory ammo or to borrow ammo in a pinch, chances are better of finding it with the WM. WM will shoot...

111 Long Range Hunter in 300 Win Mag

338, Where are you with your Savage? I don't see any recent posts by you. I haven't been able to read every word on this thread, so I apologize in advance if I'm repeating something that's already been said or ruled out. I just hoped I might be able to say something helpful here for this...

Do you prefer a hunting rifle with a detachable mag?

I wouldn't mind having a DM, depending on the gun itself, but I don't necessarily prefer one. I generally only load 3 rounds in my blind mag when hunting anyway. I've never needed round 2 yet. A DM would be easier for quick unloading when crossing streams, treestand or steep mountain climbing...

    338win mag brown bear

You don't need a muzzle break. Recoil is much more fun than magnum muzzle blast in your face and ears, any day. Your guide will thank you too.
