270 rebarreling: 280 AI, other cartridges to consider?

Oops, thanks: I meant 1:8! I'd like the fast twist in case I end up wanting to shoot solids.

@Jud96 Can you elaborate on this? I'm not readily finding info on this cartridge. Thanks!

270 rebarreling: 280 AI, other cartridges to consider?

I'm looking at rebarreling a Sako AIII in 270. Looking at 280 AI, any other cartridges to consider? Want to stick with standard 0.473 bolt face, so no magnums. Don't like belted cartridges and prefer something with dies and brass available, ok with fire forming if needed. Probably do a 1:7...

Berger 144 VLDH in 6.5 CM

Thanks. I'm going to test that Berger load at longer ranges and see how it does. My initial loads with the 136 Scenar were looking more like patterns than groups, but I did another batch and shot them in 5 shot groups round robin fashion and may have found another load worth pursuing. The...

Berger 144 VLDH in 6.5 CM

I ran some higher charges today and got to a little over 2800 but got hard bolt lift in the 2840 range, so I think I'll back down to where I was at and trial at distance.

Berger 144 VLDH in 6.5 CM

Good questions, hadn't thought of that. For this gun it's dialing elevation and I usually have a pretty good idea of range to target. So I guess in that case, flattening the trajectory doesn't matter that much.

BTW I didn't start at 43. I did a ladder up to 43 just measuring velocity and checking for pressure signs before loading this batch.

Berger 144 VLDH in 6.5 CM

Here's my first batch of hand loads. Wondering if I can speed this bullet up a little or if those more experienced would advise staying where I'm at. Carefully looked and no pressure signs. I only loaded 5 and shot at 100 yards, but can place paper to 600 yards for more testing. Berger 144 VLDH...

    Shoulder bumping technique

Thank you all for taking the time to respond. Lots that I didn't know. Some improvement today after using more lube and making sure to get the case all the way to the head. Removed some slop from the press by replacing the two bolts with a single 3/8" bolt, and focusing on getting the cases only...

    Shoulder bumping technique

Oh I see, that makes sense, and would explain why there's some inconsistency in this measurement amongst fired cases. Is it reasonable to just not worry about the shoulder until I can start to detect it on closing the bolt? Thanks.

    Shoulder bumping technique

I'm new to reloading and would like some advice on shoulder bumping. What I'm noticing is that on the first pass through my FL sizing die the case lengthens of course, and after a couple more strokes the shoulder is back about a half of a thousandth (or not at all), and sometimes further passes...
