    horsemans mountain rifle

My (steel) BLR 81 .358 has spent the most time in the Kolpin and has been utterly reliable. It doesn't even show finish wear, which is kind of a shame 'cause it's a bit glossy for my taste. I don't know anything about the newer alloy or takedown actions. I thought then and now, that it was the...

    horsemans mountain rifle

Yup, like a Harbor Freight pipe wrench - sloppy, heavy, kinda cheap, might work but probably needs work to perform. I'd like to throw in a plug for the Kolpin plastic scabbards. I don't use horses, but have bounced stuff around for a few hundred miles over several years in one on a 4-wheeler...

    Daughters new bear rifle

17 years or so back I got my youngest son a 700 Mountain Rifle in .280. He was 12 and solid, a farm boy. Still, I didn't want him to develop a flinch (I did when I was young) and I had the same concerns with weight, recoil, etc. I started him with 120 Nosler's and 4064. He was hammering...

    new to bears

What do the motor head guys say? No replacement for displacement. Agreed! I have an early '50's sporter built on an '03 Springfield that had been to Africa a couple times, according to the owner's widow. Has an integral ribbed .416 barrel, no chambering markings. Chamber casts indicated a...

    22-250 build help

I've got nothing useful to add but it seems spring has (kind of) sprung and I was thinking about this project this AM before I saw the thread. I'm in the process of building a switch barrel 700, but in sporter weight. We need an easily portable .22-250 or equiv. to keep in the truck or tractor...

    What's with the 22 Hornet?

Yes, they are! Quiet, fun, cheap and usually in a nice light package, perfect for walking around. I prefer the .218 Bee - mine isn't near as touchy to load for as the Hornet T/C Carbine barrel I had. A nice quiet round that doesn't make everything disappear for the next hour... Groundhog in the...

    new to bears

In .358 Win, this was my favorite in the thick stuff and out to 200yds or so. Speer 220gr FP performs extremely well on bear and deer. Lots of premium bullets out there as well. I used a Leupold 1-4X with heavy duplex reticule in the thick dark stuff.

    Old School Squirrels

Nice job. I rather hunt squirrels than deer, though deer fill the freezer faster! That caplock looks like a ball. I use a .218 Bee, 25 and .32-20 and some bigger.30's, all loaded down and shooting cast bullets. It's a rare occasion to be able to get a chance at that many squirrels in a day. I...
