Graybush,
Any update on your project?
I just dove in to a similar one. So far, I have on order:
22" CarbonSix bull contour barrel twisted 1:10 (heaviest I'll shoot is 265 and formulas say 1:10 is good)
AB Raptor 10-stack Suppressor
Mesa Precision Altitude stock
Red Snake nEXT bottom metal...
Total, I am carrying about 95 lbs in. But it is so that I can spot a legal moose with my 9 lb spotter/tripod and easily float it out, and not have to compete with motorized hunters. Makes for a little tougher first 1-2 days but it beats the heck out of bringing out the moose on foot.
Larry Bartlett's PR49 is what you want. It comes in only a little heavier (15 lb raft) than the Alpacka Forager but because it's reinforced in the right places and has a superior cargo carrying/sitting system. I've brought out all of my gear plus half a monster moose (split with another PR49)...
Just because this forum has a special purpose, that does not diminish the reason for having a 308. There are also great reasons to have a 22lr, an AR15, etc.
Maybe I misinterpreted the original question?
What we really need is something built on like the 6.5 creedmoor or 260 rem case, necked up to use the pressure more efficiently to a popular caliber with lots of great bullets, perhaps a little more capacity but still fit a short action. I know it sounds crazy but with today’s powders and...
The AB suppressors are lighter than that with a flush mount. I am not trying to dissuade you, but pointing out another ultra-lite option. I know that the Griffin has great reviews.
I have not. I almost bought one last fall but I chickened out because I couldn't find any field reports. A few youtuber's reviews have since come out but who knows what that is worth. But it sounds like the owner/developer knows his stuff and it should be very effective. Ryan Avery (on...
A 22” 33 Nosler is still fairly efficient. It’s not much larger than the 338 win that is the same bore to case ratio as the 30-06.
I am also interested in a similar build with a suppressor. AB suppressors has a very lightweight 33 caliber one that is apparently very good.
The Nosler cases get shorter as the caliber increases to make room for the longer lengths of the larger bullets. 0.1-0.2” shorter case means a lot for bullet room but not a ton of lost velocity. True, the spec’d freebore could have been better. Still, if meaningfully more velocity is sought...
That's a good bit more than I am interested in for hunting with. Hoping to keep the total weight down in the 9 lb realm. The beauty of the 33 nosler, imho, is that it's simply a modernized 338 win mag. Perfect for a relatively high bc bullet of around 250-265 grains.
Would love to hear more about these 33 Nosler builds. Peterson Cartridge has recently announced they are making this brass, which has me interested in a build . . . much like Closetohome's.
I mean, would a 300 wsm chamber be better to use to make into a 338 SS, than another factory chamber? I have the choice of what to start with so I’d like to know which is easiest to ream the SS into, and if it is a simple matter of reaming.
Thanks for the fast response!
I think I would still prefer the Short, as I really don't need the extra velocity. Heck, for a long time I was planning on going to the 338-06 because it could do what I wanted but in the end, I'd rather have better case life with a magnum loaded modestly.
Would...
