Lessons learned from first mountain hunt

HRstretch- I know this post is a little old, but I figured I would add a few things. 1. Look in to Ultralight Backpacking. I've been able to get my pack weight down to 30 lbs. That's everything to include rifle, optics and enough food for 4 days. We hunt in mild temperatures though (about...

    Raining in the Bivy Sack

I've come to the conclusion I'm going to set up a light tarp like a small tent. This way I can keep my hood atleast partially unzipped.

    Proper pack adjustment

I know this post is a bit old, but I figured I would post up anyways. I keep it fairly simple. 1. I loosen up all the straps. 2. Get the pack on my back and start with the waist belt first. I position the center of the belt strap on the top of my hip bone and tighten it down enough it won't...

    Raining in the Bivy Sack

This seems backwards to me, but I'll give it a try. To me it seems like the more layers you have on (within reason) the less perspiration would make it to the bivy cover.

Weight of hunting packs (empty weight)

I agree with hunting packs needing to go on diets. I'm constantly amazed at how heavy packs intended for multi day hunts are. I'm currently running a Molle Gen 2 frame with a cloth sling that runs up the back. (Similar to the Mystery Ranch BVD load carrier). I pack all my gear in 2 waterproof...

    Raining in the Bivy Sack

Are you under a tarp with the hood partially open? I was exposed with the hood zipped fully.

    Raining in the Bivy Sack

Had to weather a night of heavy rain in my bivy sack the other day. It kept the rain out, but the condensation inside from breathing was enough to make the whole hood of my sleeping bag damp. What are ya'll doing to combat this? I was thinking about bringing a small shammy next time and...

    Scouting Trip Gone Wrong

So here is a story on a scouting trip taking a turn for the worse in a funny way. My buddies and I are planning on doing the high buck hunt again. Trying to improve our odds we decided to get some scouting in. (Unfortunately we all have families and full time jobs, so it's really hard for us...

    I need some info

I built my hunting/target rifle out of savage 110 action. .308 Winchester 1-Stay with the 300 win mag 2-never used it. I have a B&C Medalist 3-You shouldn't have to do anything to accurize the action. Mine is a sub MOA gun out to at least 560 yards. That's as far as the range goes. If...

What kind of equipment do you use in the field?

Rangefinder, spotting scope w/tripod, data book, drop/wind charts, shooting mat, rear bag, backpack (caries everything & is my primary shooting rest), assortment of targets, a plan for my training that day Hunting I leave the data book, and I use my sleeping pad as a shoot mat.

    advanced reloading techniques

So I realized I only answered half of your post. Additional tools. Primer pocket uniforming tool (recommend powered, because manual gets exhausting) Flash Hole debur tool (manual is ok - you'll only do this one time) A quality Case trimming tool. Powder Trickler *I use an auto powder...

    advanced reloading techniques

I second the book - Handloading for Competition (Making the target bigger). It has a wealth of information on making accurate ammo. That said I'll tell you what I do. .308 Win FL size Uniform Primer Pocket (.001 tolerance) Debur Flash Hole Trim the Case to spec. (.001 tolerance)...

    Major Problems

I commend you for admitting you have a flinching problem. A lot of people try and blame other factors as they find it embarrassing. Don’t be embarrassed at all. When born we are all born with 2 fears all others are learned. Loud noises and falling. These are a survival mechanism. Eventually we...

Do you shoot with 1 or 2 eyes open?

Handgun, carbine and shotgun I shoot one eye closed. The shots generally come quickly and the eye isn't closed long enough to result in fatigue. Scoped Rifle both eyes open. As shots come slower I find it fatiguing to close an eye. As it it tenses my face.
