how long do you wait before you ask for your rifle back and the money. I was told that he was trying to get the rifle back to me bofore I moved in october it didnt happen. In january he said he was going to start work on it when I emailed him to ask the ETA . I emailed him last week and no email back this is the tenth month.

I would expect it to be finished on the date he told me it would be finished. If it wasn't, I would want my stuff back.

Stuff happens that can cause delays. But, you are certainly entitled to an explanation. There are a few smiths who are simply bad business people. Some have gone out of business leaving their clientelle hanging. So, I suggest you have a heart to heart with him.

I didn't want to be pushy but I didn't want to be put on the back burner eather that is why i asked. just needed to know what to expect from other gunsmiths other than the ones i've used before.

I once had a well known BR gunsmith promise to build a rifle in three months. After waiting 6 months, I started to bug him. The build actually took 15 months. Later, I found out he was putting his regular repeat customers ahead of occasional customers. I know one guy who had him chamber a barrel in 3 days.

I've ran into several issues that can cause delays I didn't account for. Bad or wrong barrel and had to re-order it. Components out of stock for months. I've always tried to keep contact with my customers when they contact me. I agree with rscott he's owes you an explanation. If he's a reputable smith and you've contacted him concerning your rifle he should get back to you within a few days. I've gotten really swamped with orders since Dec. and with all these parts on order on top of my already heavy workload they'll roll in about the same time. I try to keep honest lead times to the point where I stoppped taking any new work in for a while so I can concentrate on what's on my plate right now. Best way to **** customers off is tell them a short lead time and then not deliver. I was estimating over 9 months for alot of my new work. It's tough to estimate how much you can get done in 9 months. It's a slippery slope as a smith. Most everyone wants there stuff yesterday and they don't understand I can't just go pick components up at Home Depot. I'd rather turn out quality than quantity any day of the week. Anywho, keep trying to contact him any way you can. Call weird hours and from different phone numbers. And keep sending e-mails. I've had customers do that to me over the years. ****es me off, but I respond.

I thought I would save time and money doing my own lathe work as a hobbyist. I could not have been more wrong. But, I always know where I stand except when I'm kidding myself about how much detail is really involved.

I have had to wait 5 months..The time to have the Barrel made
and the time the Gunsmith had the work cought up.
They told me before the work started..
the smith is one of the best so I just grab my backup if I am going Deer hunting.

i seen guns that didnt go out because of so many orders its backed up from 9 months to a year a stock can be set back 4-6 months i dont know how long you been waiting for and what you are having all done to it i build high end custom rifles have any questions feel free to ask any time

WOW, that's quite the wait for a re-barrel job. Glad that you finally got it and that you're happy with it.

I'm not much into complaining, I just check in to see how it's going.

IMHO, every human has priorities that should be allowed to change from moment to moment. Every business has priorities that should be allowed to change from moment to moment. As long as those priorities are adjusted with some consideration to being fair then it is what it is.

7 months for a barrel, 3 for fitting. Very happy.
