Scope for sheep rifle

Guys, I'm new to the forum and realm of long range shooting/hunting. I'm headed up sheep hunting this fall, here in Wyoming. I'm going to do my best to harvest with my archery gear, but if that fails I need a back up plan. I just purchased a rock river precision sheep rifle chambered in 6.5x284. What are my best options for glass on top of it? And reticle?

Also, how much weight are you willing to add to your rifle, and how far do you intend to shoot a sheep with your rifle. You mentioned you'll be bowhunting. If you're happy keeping shot distances to less than 3-400 yds, you can get by with a very lightweight scope.

Right now long range for me is 3-400 yards. But hopefully someday I'll be able to stretch if needed. I'm not much of a bargain shopper for guns or optics. I generally get what I pay for and I like good guns and glass I'm not afraid of adding a little weight to the lightweight rifle as actually shoot better with a little heavier rifle than I do with a ultra lightweight rifle.

I was in the same boat as you a couple months ago. i had 5 requirements i wanted to meet for my sheep scope and just narrowed it down to the lightest one. I wanted parallax adjustment, elevation adj, and windage adj, 30mm tube, with about 40-44mm objective.

I ended up with a Mark 4 4.5-14x40. At 16oz it was the lightest i could find that met those requirements.

it'll be headed out august 5th for the real test!

I am going sheep hunting in Alaska mid-August timeframe... I bought a Swarovski z5 3.5-18x44... It's perfect... Lightweight, great glass and high magnification

It's a tad top heavy in terms of price but I can honestly say it's a great scope. Also, I got the ballistic turret model and literally today just received my customized ballistics turret from Swarovski.

It's a tad top heavy in terms of price but I can honestly say it's a great scope. Also, I got the ballistic turret model and literally today just received my customized ballistics turret from Swarovski.

I also have the Z5 3.5-18x44 and that thing is clear! The Z5 is $1500+, Weighs nearly 16oz and the turrets are zeroed to one kind of weather condition so you can't really account for current atmospheric conditions.

The mark 4 is 16oz, not quite Swarovski glass quality and $900 for the mil-for reticle version.

After having both id take the mark 4 every day of the week. Not being stuck into one turret zeroed for only one load and one kind of weather condition is sure nice.

I see your point... I don't shoot long enough ranges at sheep to need major atmosphere changes...What power is the mark 4?

I see. And if someone is in that position then you can't beat the quality of swaro glass!

The one I have is 4.5-14x40 with capped target turrets.

6.5-20 x 50 Zeiss from Camera land a supporter of this BB. Tough to beat at $599.

Another vote for the Swarovski Z5 3.5-18x44. You might consider the factory ballistic turret version instead of the custom turret. You can then set the scope up for any conditions, even changing in the field if necessary. As mentioned previously great glass, light weight and good tracking.

How is that the case? Theres yardages placed on the factory turret. The only way to accurately get those yardages are from atmospheric and ballistic info. So if the atmospheric changes or you change your load how would you change the scope for any of those variables without having a completely different turret made?
