Hey guys not long range but with all the smiths here I was hoping someone would know. Would it be possible to take a single shot action. Again I say not a repeater and convert it to 500 sw mag? Maybe an xp100 action or somethin of the like. I completely
Understand that it wouldn't be logical but I was just wondering if
It's possible. Thanks ahead

Bet it would work on a ruger #1 with a standard magnum extractor. XP? Maybe with the bolt opened to tight magnum tolerance. I didnt check but you can prob get an encore barrel in 500.

Why not a M700 SA? Just use a blind magazine or put in single shot follower.... Much cheaper, and a very easy build. You'll have a rim diameter of 0.560" you'll have to open the bolt face, there should be enough room I'd think. Add a Sako extractor that should do it.
The bottom line when you're building a custom is; throw enough money at it, and you can have any thing built you want.
Good luck

Put it in a savage SA and swap the bolt head out for a magnum one then just open it a wee bit if needed. Savage bolt heads are like $20. Plus a savage action will be cheaper than a Remington, especially for experimenting.

It hadn't wen occured to me
To use a #1. That'd be what I'd end up doin if it came
To it. Thanks guys that's perfect

The 500sw is dirt cheap in the Handi rifle.

I built a 50 cal wildcat front half for a handi rear half.

But building break action front halves from scratch is a lot of work.

I did something kind of similar to what you want on a Savage long action that I had shot the barrel out on. Mine shoots .510 cal (so far 750 Amax, pulled M33, API, and 725 grain Lehigh Defense) instead of .500 bullets like the S&W. With a 2.370" case the long action is too short to load these longer projectiles to any length what so ever and eject without removing the bolt or load into the magazine. The 500 S&W has a conventional loaded length of around 2 1/4" and the short action savage can take rounds approx 3" so that may be feasible. There are some rather long .500 cal bullets out there so you need to determine what bullets you plan on shooting.
I had thought of building a 50 Alaskan Ruger #1 but after looking at the cost of buying one just to build on I looked elsewhere. I also looked into the Alaskan on a TC single shot and called what seemed to be the guru, JD Jones at SSK. After speaking with him on the phone a couple times I realized that his attitude...demeanor...(whatever) sucked and I was not going to give him a single cent of my money.
I had thought of a 500 S&W NEF. I have one in .223 and it shoots pretty decent. However, I spoke to a buddy that has one in 45-70 and he says that the hammer has broken more than once with factory Remington core-locts. Says it's not the best platform for heavy recoiling cartridges, and I wanted to shoot heavy projectiles with a suppressor.

Added: I didn't have to do anything to the Savage bolt, it already have a magnum bolt head. The case I use is a shortened .300 ultra mag and it's rim is only slightly smaller than the .500 S&W.

That sounds interesting. I hate it when the guru talks down in any field always a disappointment. And this would be geared for close close whitetail so it would only have the pistol bullets run through it and overall length wouldn't be an issue. I'm thinkin if it was to happen it would be on a number 1

From a gun smithing point of view There are good choices of actions, and there are bad choices.

Rifle barrels for the 500 might also be a problem getting because of the bore diameter.(.4880) and (.4983 groove diameter)

A good smith can build most any action/barrel/ cartridge combination. The difference is cost.

If you pick poorly it may cost a lot of money .

I have built rifles with rimed cases and found that there are several actions that are not suited for this application.

Any bolt with a recessed face (Push feed) requires extensive machining And possibly a new extractor
installed.

Controlled feed actions are better suited for rimed cases and single shot rifles are best for this.

If you want to hunt with it, an 1885 high wall or a Ruger #1 (Or any break open action) would work the best.

Rimed cartridges are Problematic in repeaters unless they are designed for them.

With the large case head (.560 ) a falling block action is what I would recommend.

Yes sir I a
Preciate it. I figured it would work best on a falling block and I'm a number 1 freak anywayso that makes it easy. I appreciate the input
