I want to start hunting deer soon for the meat, but I don't even know where to start. I'm planning to use a 30-06 rifle for the job but other than that I'm clueless. I'm also wondering if other hunters would accidentally mistake me for a deer behind a bush and shoot me.

Is there anything else I can do with the deer like sell some parts of it like the antlers and such? any info would be greatly appreciated.

Give him/her a little credit.
City raised?
Family not firearms friendly?
No local mentor?
And last
Young?

Or
He/she is LE looking for an easy hit

Or
She/he is an anti with out a clue and looking for propaganda fodder

Just seemed like a question that needed to be asked of someone making a first post like that with no information and the couple comments that were made. If it was a troll with anti sentiments looking for fodder, they probably won't be back. If legitimate, I don't think that short little question I asked will run them off the website!

It would be very unlikely that an experience hunter would mistake you for a deer and shoot you. It would be more likely to happen in reverse where an inexperienced hunter such as yourself mistakes another hunter for a deer and shoots them.

I admire your spirit and think taking up deer hunting is a good thing to do. However, though there is lots of info on this forum, it won't be enough to make you a successful deer hunter if you are starting from zero. I suggest you find some folks in your area that hunt, get to know them and see if they wouldn't be willing to take you along. You can meet such folks at your local rifle range. There is regular downtime at a range when people are switching targets and such that are good times to get to know people. Maybe your local game department could hook you up with some classes. Check out the local library section on hunting. If you got money to burn, hire a hunting guide who doesn't mind working with newbies. Good luck.

A good place to start is to read everything you can find on the subject:

It saves a lot of embarrassment when you find yourself actually faced with the responsibility of the hunt.
You would also be wise to study some safety rules. Hunting laws differ from state to state but safe gun handling practices are essentially universal:

In every state I've hunted, selling "parts" of game is illegal. The only possible exception might be antlers.

Read my friend; read.

A good place to start would be a hunter education/safety class. Check with your state fish and game dept. to get the details for your area.
