So I have a standard savage 110 7mm rem mag. 24" standard barrel...basic gun. So rather then buy a new barrel,etc.... I'm thinking of buying either a rem 700 long range in a 300 win mag, or a weatherby vangaurd in 300 win mag. And build me a mid to long range animal shooting beast..many thoughts?? Loads?? Thinking 180-208 a max bullets. Thought about the ultra mag,wby mag. But the gain isn't worth the lack of barrel life or the extra powder .. Thanks for all the help

I'm a huge fan of the 300 win mag and either 210 o 215 Bergers. It is such an all around versatile cartridge I think you are making a great choice. As far as the gun goes, I think either you mention are solid options.

Is saving up a little longer and going to a custom build out of the question?

I hear ya. Got 2 young kids myself.

The 700 rem long range 300 win mag with the B&C M40 stock it comes with is a sweet setup. Hard to beat a package like that. I know there's quite a bit of guys here who shoot those as well as the Weatherby Vanguards. Seems like people like them both, so I don't think you can go wrong.

Out of curiosity, where and what are you planning to hunt with this setup?

I agree you can't go wrong with a 300 wm, I shoot 208 amax's in mine. I wouldn't discount your Savage 7mm; you might find that loading for that could produce the long range beast you are looking for. I would also consider buying a Criterion barrel in 300 wm for it. That would be more accurate than the vanguard or remington. You can put the barrel on yourself.

Black bear, elk, caribou maybe. I archery hunt for deer and elk now but am saving some scratch for a hunt with my boy in the future who knows for what but i want to be covered. :) looked at the 300wsm as well...thanks

+1!

For budget, get a 26" barrel for your Savage. 7mm mag will do everything you need. If you really want a 300. Go that route. Good stocks can be had for the Savage.

I think a new barrel for the 7mm would be a very affordable upgrade to increase performance and accuracy, but to get out hunting with your son you'll also probably want 2 rifles. Your first thoughts of a new Sendero or weatherby magnum I think are on track. Or even being patient watching the classified adds here for a used 300. Lots of great deals pass through here for real shooters.
