Hello everyone. I currently shoot a 270 wsm and I am considering purchasing a quality barrel. But this opens a lot of questions for me. While I prefer the 270 ( maybe because most shooters say it can't shoot long range) bullet availablity suggests it may be a good idea to change. I have heard tale of a 270wsm necked down to a 6.5. Does anyone here have any info on this guy ? What could i expect for accuracy at long range? Long range accuracy is my goal. Any thing will help. Suggest at will. Thank you much.

My most accurate ELR rifle to date is a 270 WSM shooting 165 Matrix bullets, like the 6.5's also but there is no reason to change from a 270 to 6.5 for long range shooting of any kind unless it just blows your skirt up which is totally understandable :D

What kind of range are you getting from your wsm ?

I have no problem with mile plus shooting, with the 165 and 175 Matrix. Taken elk out into the 900 yard range cold bore on several occasions as well.

The 6.5 is fun but it won't run with the larger bullets and barrel life is just that much less. For the 6.5 the SAUM case is very nice and I shoot a wildcat using SAUM brass that is very close capacity to the 6.5 SAUM but is shorter to cycle easy through an unmodified short action. About 70gr O2 case capacity is about ideal for the 6.5 IMO.

Wow ! Sounds like you fellas are sold !:) good on ya an glad to hear it. What kind of prep and load are ya putting behind those matrix bullets? I have read that a bullet that heavy may like a faster twist and a bit longer barrel also. Sounds like you have a lot of things figured out that I'm still wrestling with.

I shoot at 5600 ft elevation + and that lets me stabilize the 165 and 175 in a 1-10 twist, ideally a 1-9 for the 165 would allow you to be stable anywhere.

I'm shooting a 27in barrel chambered with a 270 WSM tight neck and .180 throat, I idle the 165 at 3060fps and the few times I've shot for a 6 shot group at 1000 and 1450 it's been under 1/2 MOA shooting from a bipod. Mostly I cold bore shoot with a follow up round at targets of opportunity. This is a single shot set up with a 3.2 COAL.
A barrel length between 26 and 28 inches is ideal with the WSM.

This last year I've been shooting the 6.5 SS which is a pushed back and blown 6.5 SAUM with a 29 inch barrel, I idle the 140's at 3200 fps and run the 160 Matrix in the 3050-3100 fps range but I have not settle on a spot with them yet, all with proper bullet placement in the neck yet in a short enough package it cycles like butter through a standard short action. I plan on building a 270 version soon so I can use the short action configuration easier and still hunt with the 165 Matrix.

Re: 6.5-270 wsm ?s big hit with everyone.

Well it lookslike I'm staying with the 270wsm. New Shilen is in the mail. But I would like your opinion on the reamer. I thought off going with a minimum spec as to neck size so I could still use the dies that I have. Or am I ahead to go with a tight neck .and buy the new dies. The matrix bullets seam to be a big hit with everyone. Any suggestions on a starting point for a load ?

Good to hear the .277 buzz. The 165 Matrix seem sold out so will be first time trying 175s in a new built 27 Nosler. Been doing my break in with the new 165 Nosler ABLR and fine so far through the 1.8 Proof.
