Has anyone had the opportunity to handle the newish 700 Long range with the Bell and Carlson M40 stock from the factory? To me it looks like an SPS Varmint with an upgraded stock and in appropriate long range calibers. From what I've seen I'm wondering, is it a Cabela's exclusive? I can't find any reviews except for on their site and no one else seems to have them for sale.

I handled one at Sportsmans Warehouse a few weeks ago. So it is not a Cabelas exclusive. I doesn't have some of the finishing touches of a Sendero. The bold is not jeweled and the solder resin was not buffed from the bolt arm solder weld. Barrel finish was not as nice. Felt great though.

There were a few sold elsewhere. Cabelas seems to be very well priced on them. Perhaps Broz will chime in? He and I talked about one. He had the chance to handle one a couple of weeks ago. He thought the barrel was like the old Sendero style. The impression I got from him was that he thought they could be made to shoot without too much trouble and expense. That's if they didn't do great right out of the box. He said the .300 Win Mag he looked at was $699. I've seen a couple posted for a lot more so look around before you buy. Bruce

Yeah, I've seen them posted from private individuals and retailers anywhere from $647 to 850. I think 699 to 740 is pretty average and It seems to have everything I'd need to get back into the long range game.

Buddy just picked up the 7mm mag two weeks ago and I would have to agree with above. I must say it does feel good to me. I liked the higher comb...Anxious to try it at the range. He wants to work up loads using the 160 accubond

Let us know how it performs.

I handled one today. I have a 300WM Sendero , a 25-06AI Sendero & a 5R Mil-Spec 308, but I may get one of these in 30-06. My 25 is the old Sendero & it is alot like that, yes not as well finished, but that is not my concern. If the barrel is good this will be the best buy going.

I agree! I too handled one last week after a customer that is a self proclaimed expert in Remingtons gave it a thumbs down. It got me interested and absolutely did NOT see anything wrong with it, esp for the price, but then again, I'm no expert.:cool::D

Being that you have so much room to play around with 7mmRM loads, even up to the lands, in a 700 LA, I would get him to also give the Berger 168 VLD's a try. I used them this past hunting season on game for the first time, and I was thoroughly impressed. Prior to that, I used (and still have a bunch of them collecting dust) 160 Accubonds. The Accubonds worked perfect as well, but you can really tell when the deer get smacked with a Berger VLD. The energy it expells is rediculous. One of the 2 deer I shot was about 125-150 yards away, and it hit her so hard she flopped. Never took a step, never moved. O.U.T. The other deer was probably 175 yards away, and he only ran about 20 yards into the woods and crashed.

I'm a quite proficient shot, and none of the deer I shot with Accubonds ran less than 50 yards. Granted, meat damage was minimal, and organ damage was extensive. So as far as functionability goes, the Accubond is an excellent bullet, and my 2nd choice. But they don't expell that hard-hitting energy the Berger VLD's do. The Berger has all the same good quality characteristics as the Accubond, but seems to hit harder. Which I like. I hate tracking and chasing game.

I gave one a long look over at Cabela's in Billings. I like the high cheek piece and the feel of the stock. Another thing about the stock for those of you that are left handed but shoot RH rifles. This stock is the same both sides, same cheek weld, same grip with no swells, so it should work for you too. I have one of these stocks for a build I am doing and I have tested it a bit for flex and I think it will be just fine. Not a McMillan by any means, but a good solid stock with a tight aluminum rail. The barrel contour looks to be the same as the Sendero, although I have not measured yet. But the looks of the barrel reminded me exactly of the first model black oxide sender barrels. The trigger on the 700 LR I looked at was pretty clean with little felt creep, but for sure needs lightend up for my taste. It is adjustable but if needed I will swap it out for a Timney. So we bought one of these in 300 win. I will be bedding it and installing a brake along with the trigger tune/replace. Then I plan to wring it out with 215 Bergers and see what I get. I am optimistic it will shoot well enough to be a great rifle for anyone wanting to get their feet wet in the LR game without dropping big bucks to get started.

These can be bought for $650ish. If you figure the take off stock worth $200, bottom metal at $75 barrel at $100, trigger at $30 this leaves a guy with a 700 REM long action, Mag bolt face for $245. How can that be a bad deal?

That's exactly how I look at Rem 700's. I never expect too much because even if you rebuild it from the action on up, you still got a cheap action to build off of. But if you choose to re-work it, you have a nice stock, barrel, and action to work with for a good budget build. Junk the X-Crap trigger and slap in an old style Rem wide-shoe, work the action and barrel, and see what you got!

Keep us updated Jeff. I am curious to see your findings.
