There are probably 10 top barrel makers.

Who the top four is depends on who you talk to, and there location. If you did a survey in Dallas
Shillen would come out on top.

If you did the survey in New York Hart would probably be #1.

If you talk to 10 different smiths across the country you will most likely get 10 different brands.

The point is you have to decide what brand you want or go with your smiths recommendations
because he is responsible for the quality and accuracy of your rifle.

I use the barrels that consistently give me sub 1/4 MOA to sub 1/2 MOA accuracy and consistency
in quality, break in, customer service, straightness, (TIR Less than .002 end to end) heat treatment,
ETC.

Its like the Chevy verses ford debate.

The only way to tell a good barrel is to shoot it. The barrel makers will tell you they can't tell either. If they could they wouldn't turn out a bad barrel.

There is nothing wrong with your question. It's just that you will not get the same answer because there are lots of good barrels that In the hands of a good Smith will shoot Sub 1/2 MOA.

My recommendation is to research each barrel maker and take notes on each ones acceptance
standards. (Straightness end to end run out, bore tolerance (How much is allowed before rejection)
What different grades they produce(How many)

Armed with all this information, you will be able to pick the barrel that will best fit your needs and
level of quality required.

Once you have decided on "Your" top 4 call and find out how well they do with new customers
and delivery schedules.

Or simply talk to your smith and get his recommendations.

Simple question, complicated answers.

I have:
4 Pac-Nor, only 2 installed and shot, very, very happy. 1000 yards, no problem.
2 Krieger, both 30 cal. Oh yeah they shoot.
2 Benchmark. Awaiting installation
1 Bartlien. Awaiting installation.
1 Criteron, not shot. Need to finish inletting stock.

But

There are many other manufacturers that I am sure produce very high quality.

since I am from Milwaukee and go back twice a year I gues I can decide on either Krieger,bartlein brux or broughton their all within sixty miles and can save on shipping.

Since when is shipping a concern on a custom barrel? Thats the last thing on my mind at least but I may be the odd man out.

They are all capable of building hummer barrels. Cut and button rifled barrels alike. You spend your money and take your chances. My only pet peeve is the companies that push installing their own. Why go to the trouble of buying a custom barrel and then having some hourly guy stick it in a collet and push the button for the 15 minute fitting job? If I wanted that level of precision I would buy a factory rifle. In my mind a proper barrel fitting should take most of a day. There is nothing very precision in production barrel fitting.

I would be extremely interested in any barrel maker that can consistently supply a barrel with

TIR Less than .002 end to end

. In 5 years I have had about 3 that straight. Then again I use mostly Bartlein and Krieger and they can't do it. How are you measuring? I only go by the bores.

HWM, I had a Shilen barrel put on a custom once and it was okay but I would probably put a Bartlein barrel on another build if I ever have another done. I will not nor cannot tell you that the Bartlein barrel is better than any other custom barrel maker but they seem to have a very high strong reputation. I think some barrels are just better than some just like them in the way one guy will rave about the reliability of a certain truck and another guy that has an identical truck will tell it was a total *** or maybe it was like my Shilen and just okay..............., just luck of the draw.
