30 on 375 ruger case

It should put you right there with the 300 Dakota/Weatherby. I have a few dummy rounds made up but never got around to building a gun.

This is a 375, 338, 300 Ruger and a 300 wsm.

Lots of potential and as you can see you aren't the first to think of it.

If you're thinking of building something along these lines the 30 HSM is a great way to go, but you might consider waiting a year because I would not be at all surprised to see Nosler coming out with their own using the same case as the 26 Nosler in the near future.

To me the availability of factory ammo and a guaranteed lifetime supply of brass makes it worth waiting.

The 30-375 Ruger and 300 Dakota are almost identical cases. Basically the same volume but the Dakota is slight shorter and fatter. 300 Dakota brass is made by Hornady and IMO, very good quality. 375 Ruger brass also made by Hornady is about half the cost of Dakota brass but I can not comment on its quality, I assume it's good.

So the question is, do you go with the 300 Dakota and it's more spendy brass (about $2.00 per case) or do you go with the 30-375 with cheaper brass (about $1.00 per case) and go through the process of necking it down which will include the cost of a sizng die (338 RCM). Is the cost of the sizing die and the work necking down the brass worth ~ $1.00 per case?

It (or the 300 Dakota) would be a great 30 cal cartridge sitting right between the 300 WM and 300 RUM.

Or do what I'm doing and wait a year to see what Nosler comes up with using the same case as the 26 Nosler in a 30 cal.

It would almost seem like a complete waste of time and resources for them to only come out with one proprietary cartridge with a case that has so many possibilities.

That would be the 300 Blaser Magnum ?

I have built a 30-375 Ruger it goes very well, 208s at 3100fps out of 26"

Not really. They can tweak there's any number of ways. As long as the case volume is similar the performance will be similar but they can call it their own and submit it to SAAMI.

From what I can find on the Blaser 300 performance wise it's lower velocity than the 300wm and I suspect the Nosler case would be a bit better. I doubt it'll take us too long to find out though as pumped as people are about the possibilities of the 26 Nosler and it's case.

The 30-.375 has a great deal of appeal though. I've had a 375 Ruger on order and should finally get a chance to shoot it a bit in the next week or so and I'm pretty pumped about it. With a trip to Alaska on the horizon as well as one to S. Africa in the near future I certainly should get plenty of opportunity to enjoy the parent cartridge quite a bit.

so much ado about a case that does not provide any performance improvements..... just go with a 300 Norma Magnum, that is where it starts to get interesting

Based on the drawing in post #97 in this thread,

We already know what all that there is to know about the 26 Nosler. Case volume wise, it sits right between the 300 Dakota and the 300 RUM. Brass is $2.64 per case for Nosler brass. That right there is a show stopper for me. If it was Lapua quality brass it would be worth it but not for Nosler brass. I haven't used any Nosler brass but all that I read about it says it is not very durable like Lapua or even Norma brass. Well sorted and needs little prep but on the soft side. In my experience with RP brass in the 300 RUM, I almost always loose 1 or 2 cases when pressure testing a bullet/powder combo looking for the upper limit and from what I hear, Nosler is no more durable than RP. My experience with Norma brass in the 300 WSM is quite different and it has held up much better under the upper end (over max) pressures without loosing a case and hardly stretching a primer pocket.

Based on my experiences with the 300 RUM, brass is a big issue with me in these larger magnum calibers. Until Norma or some other manufacturer come out with more reasonably priced brass that has some good durability the 26 Nosler is not a consideration for me. I am just not going to pay Lapua prices for brass unless the brass has Lapua quality and toughness.

The 300 NM sits right between the 26 Nosler and 300 RUM, only a few gr of powder diff from each. An interesting option for sure.

Edit correction: 300 Norma Mag brass is about $2.22 per case in the 100 lot.

The Norma & Nosler brass I tested in 300 Rum was exactly the same brass except for the head stamp.

The weight, capacity, measurements & section were the same.

I don't know about others calibres but it is often said the Norma makes Nosler brass & then Nosler "pretty it up"

Yes, that is my understanding as well. Norma makes Nosler brass. I wonder though if Norma uses a different spec brass for their headstamp vs Nosler headstamp? I asked the question concerning the 300 RUM brass in this thread but didn't get a definitive answer, so I opted for the Bertram EDGE brass. Did you give the Norma brass a good pressure workout in the 300 RUM?

I have read some reports that Norma brass can be on the soft side but that is not my experience with 270 WSM and 300 WSM Norma brass.

In any case, the Norma brass is much more reasonably priced if it is indeed the same product as the Nosler.
