I am new here to posting been reading a lot lately. I am going to be elk hunting in Wyoming quite a bit now that I am a resident there. I have been debating on which caliber to use. Basically what I have found from a lot of reading is it just comes down to preference of which rifle. The 300 Win Mag has a little more kick to it as well. Any advice would be greatly appreciated. I found what I think is a good deal on a 7mm but not exactly sure so wanted to get an idea from everyone here. The guy says it's a savage model 112 in the 7mm REM MAG. Comes with 520 rounds and has less than 10 rounds through the gun. I was sort of set on a 300 Win Mag, but if this is a good deal I don't want to pass on it. He wants $1200. Here are a couple pictures I got from him.
Thanks in advance for the help.

If it is a 7 rem mag, it will work. If it is a bigger 7mm all the better (7 STW, 7 RUM).

For Elk I would go with a 338 because of bullet weight, but the big 7s are more than enough to down a Elk with good shot placement and premium bullets 160 grains or larger.

Just my opinion

Welcome to LRH and enjoy!

Kinda hard to tell if it's good deal without selling price. lightbulb

It is pretty easy to change that rifle to a .300 WM if you find that the 7RM is not what you want.

Gunsmith not necessarily needed either. Just a new barrel and a few tools and some research.

That particular Savage retails for about $1000 here at the local gun shop. Nothing wrong with the 7mm RemMag. You could use it for elk now and then move it down to your deer-and-smaller choice when you buy something larger.

Don't be fooled, some people think 50 BMG is a good gopher caliber!

I think that is a pretty nice rifle. Savage Model 12s are good actions. I don't think they even make the 112 anymore. Plus that looks like a factory barrel with a factory on/off muzzle brake. That would be nice. Also with 500 or so rounds of ammo. That would be hard to beat.

It is always hard to tell what a used gun will shoot like. But like others have said, with a Savage, you can easily upgrade the barrel yourself and even change it to a 300 Win Mag for that matter, latter down the road.

Heck I would be interested in it, if you don't want it!

Well, I played around a little on the blue book of gun values today for this gun and this was my finding.

1. Are we 100% sure it isn't a 116 FHSAK?
2. There isn't one 112 in the current bluebook that is valueing at higher than 600 bucks unless it is one of the dedicated target rifles (single shot, pillar bedded,
