.270 Wildcat idea for 165/175 Matrix

I've been kicking around the idea of a wildcat for the 165 or 175 gr Matrix VLD, or 170 Berger if they ever get made. I took into account brass price and quality, load pressures, barrel length (26" preferred), and be able to use a suppressor for .300 WM. I initally looked at the 270 WSM, but it would have to be loaded fairly hot to reach 3000+ fps. I think the 7 LRM is a perfect canidate for the wildcat. I like the long neck, and I've heard great things about the brass. Dies and brass are avialable from Gunwerks (bushing dies for the 7 LRM, I believe). A good load of H1000, or even Retumbo, would easily push the 165 to 3100 fps or the 175 to 3000 with decently low chamber pressures, I think at least. That combo would be very effective on elk to 1k yds and deer/antelope to 1300+ yds. These are my ideas at least. Am I thinking crazy?

You could also use the .300 WIN Mag as a parent case, though this could be a problem with its short neck, which could be fixed. The plain old 7mm REM Mag would be a good canidate, if its neck was lengthened. Brass is a lot easier to find for these than the 7mm LRM. The problem is, the .270 Weatherby Magnum would be the same as one of these wildcats, that I mentioned. I feel like the .375 Ruger which is the 7mm LRM parent case, may be too overbore. The .270cal is at max with a medium sized magnum case. After that I feel you burn too much powder with little gains in velocity and barrel life depletes quickly. It sure would be cool though to have a capable 1000yd elk killer. that was .270cal!

There's the 7mm Dakota which is a little smaller than the 300 Dakota. IMO, the 7 Dakota (or 7 LRM) is the next logical step up from a WSM. There is the 7RM and 300 WM in between but wildcats off belted mags just don't cut it with me.

Another options is to neck down the 6x68S and maybe improve it a little.

I was wanting to stay away from any belted cases. I did think about the Dakota cases, but the price is a big turn off. The last time I checked they were about $2.50 each. Desides, the long neck LRM should help the barrel last longer.

Last I checked, you could get the Dakota cases cheaper by the 100 lot direct from Dakota... about $2.00 each... and the Hornady made 300 Dakota brass that I got was very good quality IMO. But the 7 LRM is definitely a good case for a reasonable price.

There's nothing wrong with belted cases if they're necked sized after being fireformed in your chamber.

I have been working up a load using the 165 matrix in my 270 weatherby accumark ended up at 3080 fps with a 26" barrel. I don't think the 10 twist barrel will stabalize the 175s

The 175 might surprise you. In getting the to run 1/2 MOA at 2840 FPS at 7200'.

This thread makes me Happy, Happy, Happy! I think the 7 LRM would be a good base for wildcatting this with lower chamber pressure, the 300 Win would be also no problem with the belt but being a guy that dislikes the belt I understand.

Another case that has merit IMO is the 300 Norma mag case if you want to run lower chamber pressure OR you want to push it!
