Considering getting one of these rifles (carbines?). Lilja makes a stainless drop in barrel for the DPMS .308 line, but would like to know if anyone has experience with the factory barrel accuracy. For the price of the rifle, I'd rather not have to replace the barrel.

Thanks, Tom

I have one of these and it shoots pretty good. I like the handling of it as it is comparable to my AR15. It recoils lightly, swings quickly, and gets on target as fast as you can expect from it. I do think the larger round is better served in a longer barrel as my AR is my "fast gun" to use. My plans for this rifle include a 24" barrel in .257Roberts later on. This project is for my personal tastes so don't be swerved by it. This is a great gun for general use if you pick it up.

With factory ammo it put 5 shots into about an inch at 100yds. At 500 drop was pretty significant, but groups were about 6". I used standard 150gr SP loads from Winchester.

With handloads I wasn't able to shave much off. I did finally develop a load that puts 5 rounds into .75"@100yds with 150gr Sierra GK's and Varget.

I bought this little gun to have for a later project, but it served deer hunting purposes this last season. I took this spike with it at 400yds. thought it was a doe in the fading light as you can tell by my oh so excited expression at finding my error. My daughter also used it at 200yds to anchor a doe as well.

Here is my oldest on it for some fun at 300yds:

Hope this helps.

Thank you for the info and pictures. The rifle looks just like yours. I had a trade working that fell through, so probably won't be getting it. If I do work it out, I'll update the thread.

Thanks again, Tom

Purchased one on sale for a stand gun for deer and possibly a hog gun. Using Sierra Match Kings 168gr BTHP it consistantly shot 3" or less @500yds. Much better than I expected with a short barrel and heavier bullet. Buts its compact, points easy exspecially if your used to an AR hunting platform or prior Military. If you need it for LR shooting and the AR is the platform you want, I would build a dedicated upper so you have the best of both worlds in the same rifle case.

I haven't given up on the deal, and it sounds like I should keep trying to get it. I don't want to push too hard though.

I have a handload that I put together years ago to simulate Mexican Match and later, the M852 NM Lake City. Pretty much on par with that ammo. It shoots well in M1A's, and should be good in the black guns.

I have used an M1A with match sights for hog hunting. Liked it because I could hose them down. When you do that, you may or may not be able to kill more than one, but they still remember that it was a really bad day and won't come back for awhile. Bad juju for them when they are panicking and seeing rocks, cedar trees, prickly pear, and family members getting hit. Redneck entertainment.

The M1A with a scope was also a fair deer gun in a pinch. I would expect the Oracle would be too. It should also be able to make faster follow-up shots on hogs than the M1A.

Thanks for jumping in Jim,

Tom

Yeah thats right. The best tool for the job is sometimes the closest one. that being said I hit a 430lb hog with my 7mmSTW and **** canned it with extreme prejudice. Hit the left shoulder and just blew his whole front end out. Looked like a cartoon when something gets hit by an anvil. But it completed the task, My buddy uses a 20" Barrel M77 300WM for hogs. Bad day for wilbur for sure.

My Smith Buddy who does custom work says these are the ones that play well together:

DPMS
Knights Arm.
Fulton Armory
Remington
CMMG

Jim, good stuff to know. I was looking last week to see if mags were available, and somewhere it said that the DPMS mags would work in the Rem R-25.

Still hoping to close the deal. Kind of enthused now.

Thanks, Tom
