Okay guys, I am building my first semi custom rifle. I havegun) read and researched everything I can and came up with this idea. After talking to many shooters I feel comfortable with this selection.
Trued 700 action with raceway reamed to .703
Ptg bolt milled to .700
Canoed bottom metal
B & C medalist varmint & tactical stock
28" Heavy varmint contour barrel with threaded muzzle
After market trigger (undecided) set around 1.5
15-20 moa picatinny rail
Rings (undecided)
Optics ultimately want night force nxs he zs moar
but will start out with what my budget will allow till I need the high magnification.
Not sure on bipod yet either either Harris br swivel and can't or versapod
Looking to shoot high BC bullets berger, matrix, cutting edge, etc...
Bed the action and rail if needed.

I think this is about it. Oh I don't see an issue with the factory lock time but have considered a tubb speed lock firing pin assembly, any thoughts? If you have have any suggestions feel free to express them. Thanks

You'll need 1:8" for the 175 and 1:9" for the 165 Matrix bullets for "best" stabilization.

For rings and base look into nightforce, seekins precision, or leupold MK4 bases. For cheaper ring you have the weaver tactical or Burris rings to check out at well. I think the latter two run for about $40-$50.

I've pushed the 175 while fire-forming to AI at 2900 FPS and over 3000 FPS AId (settled for 2993 FPS for my accuracy load at this time) off 30" Lilja 3-groove 1:8" in my .270 AI giving me performance level comparative to factory 7MM Rem Magnum.

That's pretty impressive results there. Would a 30" be worth it to me or should I stick with the 28"?

I would stick with 28....even that is probably more than you need. Unless it is solely a bench gun 30 will be way to long.

if you're gonna spend all that hard-earned money on a custom built rifle, then make it truly a custom or something unique. At the minimum have the chamber reamed to .270 Ackley Improved 40* Shoulder, and enjoy the added velocity and that cool and unique factor. You can load and shoot your regular .270 Win brass in it, and once you fire it, out pops a perfectly formed .270 AI brass ready for next load.

Now, you may not want to fire-form brass...Some folks think it's a pain in the ***, but if you do it a few brass (20-50) in an afternoon, then it shouldn't be a big deal, IMO.

Just my thoughts on the caliber selection. But everything else you listed looks like should be a dang nice rifle.

Please check your PM. I agree with Mud's AI recommendation.

I developed regular .270 Win loads while fire-forming to AI. In short, I have .270 Win and .270 AI accuracy loads while fire-forming and barrel break in.

As far as the length, it comes down to a personal choice, preference, hunting/shooting requirement. 28" was original plan and should be plenty. However, I opted for the 30" as it is the same price.

Furthermore, I can always cut it down to 28" if I choose to but I can't do the other way around.

With my 30" + ~2" muzzle brake puts my total length just shy of 54", thus requiring an extra long gun case.

The straight 270 Win with the 165 is quite nice and shoots extremely well, amping it up with an AI or even better using the Sherman case design with some Norma brass and it will be quite impressive running just a touch short of what a properly built WSM will.

I've shot both the 165 and 175 out to 1990 yards and I prefer the 165, the 175 does not seem to gain much IMO and I've seen the 165 shoot 5 shot groups at 1450 yards that you can cover with your hand.

An other thing to remember the 170gr Berger EOL bullet has been built and shot so once Berger gets caught up we should be seeing that bullet coming to market and a guy would definitely want to be able to use a little more case capacity to maximize that bullet!!!

Once it is burnt I could re chamber and have a nice barrel and a new throat correct? This gun is gonna be seem pretty long, as I am only 5'6 when I wake up.

Yeah, make sure on your barrel you order a long shank, so you can cut it back and rechamber with a new throat later when the old one gets burnt out.

I'd go 26"-28" Maybe 28+VIAS brake. Just my thoughts.
