1000yd 7mm Rem Mag

Hey guys I've got a Remington 700 in 7mm rem mag that I bought off of gunbroker hoping to turn it into a long range rifle. I'm not really looking to turn this into a wildcat caliber, just wanting to stick with 7mm. Anybody got any ideas as far as finding a good drop in barrel, length/twist. Also would like to change the stock and trigger as well. I've already got a leupold mark4 with custom reticle so that's not a problem. Also anyone one with any built up loads reaching 3000fps would also be appreciated!

You'll have to have a smith thread it, chamber it, and fit it...But it will be worth it.

Length needs to be atleast 26". Twist needs to be 1:9.

What weight bullet do you plan on shooting? Also, loads are rifle specific, and what will work in 1 gun, will not necessarily work in any other gun.

Well I've done a little lookin around, and I shoot 140 bergers out of my 6.5-284 and was leanin toward 168 bergers for the 7mm.

The 168's should work ok, but I'd recommend the Berger 180 VLD or 180 Hybrids.

Personally I would give Jim Briggs a call at Northland shooters and ask about the Remage barrels. If you go that route, once you pull the original barrel no smith is required from then on. You simply loosen the barrel nut, put on a barrel, head space and your good to go.

You can do the same thing with a switch-barrel without the nut, and a pinned recoil lug. Looks better than the nut, too. You buy however many barrels you want in whatever bore-diameters you want, then have the action trued, have the recoil lug pinned to the action, then have each barrel's headspacing set on that action and recoil lug. Then after that, all you need is a barrel vise, an action wrench, and a torque wrench and you're good to go. You don't even have to have a torque wrench if you use proofing marks for alignment. But I prefer the torque wrench, it's more precise.

What powder are you planning on using? Hodgdon H1000 and IMR 7828 SSC are what I use for mine.

Let me know what powder and what bullets, and I can give you a book starting load, and a max book load.

Also, if you plan on loading Berger bullets, I'd highly recommend buying a reloading manual.

I got good results with Retumbo and 160 AB's out of a 24" barrel. Not using that rifle anymore for the time being, but if I was, I would be looking at running 180's with Retumbo and RL33. H1000 is another good powder for the 7 RM but probably better for the 168's as it is a little faster than Retumbo.

So I didn't do any further testing with them. Once I get my Rem 700 7mm rebarreled (taking it to the smith this evening), I'll continue testing with the 7828 SSC and 180 Hybrids.

I was pushing 168 VLD's with H1000 right at 3000. 160 Accubonds with H1000 around 2991. 180 VLD's with H1000 at around 2830.

Thanks. I was looking into the 162 A-MAX, 168 VLDs, and the 180 VLDs. The rifle I was checking out was a factory Remington 700 with 26" barrel. Thinking about it for a backup to my custom .308 Norma Mag.

7mm RM is a great all-around caliber from light bullets and LR varmints to big heavies and LR moose.

If you don't go the remage route, you might want to take a look at RW Snyder gunsmithing in Iowa..he will chamber and install your new barrel as well as true your action for $250. Thats as cheap as I've seen he has a good following over on snipers hide..
