Hi guys ! I am getting ready to build my first 7STW. My question is this- I would like to build the gun on a Savage action like the rest of my guns are but are they long enough for the caliber ? Looks like most of the guns you guys have on here are built on 700 actions. I don't want to look like an idiot when I start talking to the gunsmith about the build, so I am looking for some advice on which to use. Thanks...........................JR

Some savages are, but a lot aren't. If it wasn't built with a rum or stw barrel on it to start with, you're likely going to have issues. You need an action that'll take 3.6" cartridges. Rem la's, ruger#1's, some m70's, browning a-bolt la, etc will all do it with the correct mag components.
I believe the savage action length issue was touched on in the brotherhood thread, but I don't know how long ago. The standard ('06 length) action rifles will do very well with the 7x300win or the 7x375ruger variants as they'll fit in a standard length action.

The 116 is chambered in calibers including 375 H&H so it might work. Pick up a phone and call Savage Customer Service and ask.
The 375 H&H and 7mm STW have the same max overall length of 3.6" so I think you can do it on the same action but call to be sure.

A couple of savage guys were having issues with the bolt stop location and replacing the mag with a long enough one unless the rifle was built with a 3.6" cal. to start with.
A chat with a smith or a call to savage are the two ways that'll for sure straighten this out, but I know there were issues with some rifles.
I talked to the gunsmith yesterday and he said it would be easier and less expensive to go with the 700 action than the savage. My budget says cheep so Remington action here I come! Thanks again for the advice.............JR

Try shopping around at local pawn shops and gunshops for a used 700 in any magnum caliber that's a beat up piece of junk. You can probably get one for 400.00 or less now that hunting season is pretty well over everywhere.

Don't look past a good Model 70 Winchester either. Remington may be more popular but they certainly are not a better action. If you can find one of the 90's era pre 64's at a bargain I' say jump all over it. The new version with the controlled round feed is no slouch but you must load a round into the magazine to get it to pick up and chamber correctly which is a bit of a pain.

Would a remington 700 .300 ultra mag be easy to turn into a 7mmstw. I have a .300 ultra mag that would be a good canident for a new build. i hope this action will work with a build!

Yep.
AS Layne Simpson said in the original article, the easiest cheapest way to get one is simply have your smith punch a Ruger #1 in 7mm Rem Mag. Plently strong, no magazine issues and it already has a 26" barrel in a package that is at least 4 inches shorter than a bolt gun and a lot handier to carry.

The Ruger No 1 is a great platform, but some of us don't want a single shot hunting rifle. In this case we're discussing what existing actions can be rebarreled to the 7mm STW not about going out and buying an action to build one on.
I'm new here. NOT new to rifles, hunting or the STW. I don't see others getting a bunch of flack for mentioning some other rifle/action that can work. The question ABOVE was can I make it out of my existing 300 ultra mag I have. THAT was not the original question nor the answer often given,
I'm old enough and cranky enough I don't need this attitude stuff. I simply was saying IF you were building one do NOT discount the #1.
As for shooting a single shot, I've hunted all over the world for the last 40 plus years and have logged as of last year just over 300 head of big game on multiple continents, Since 1967 nearly 95% have been killed with a #1 of some kind or another and those not killed by a #1 were probably killed with a Browning 78 or original Winchester Highwall.
